I’m a new owner to a Bass VI and wondering what strings players use on this bass. I normally play Slinky 105-50 nickel wounds on my four string P Bass, Ric 4003, Stingray etc which I like the sound but wondering what may go well with the Bass VI.
Also check out the (new, 24-100 gauges) Invalid Link Removed. Inexpensive and a good place to start figuring out what you like and what you don't.
Newton also makes a 24-100 set.
Curt Mangan a (24-90) one.
Kalium, a bunch, in different gauges.
La Bella makes three 26-95 sets, one of which is flatwound.
Pyramid has one round, one flat available (both 25-95).
Same for SGB-Parts (they're out of stock currently), and the low E in both the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] is a whopping (not really) .105".
Winspear in the UK also offers some nicely balanced or even progressive (tension goes down slightly from low to high strings so lows are tigher and highs are looser, more bendable) tension. I prefer the lighter top strings, but wish they offered a heavier bottom as well.
I use my bass VI mostly for bass but want to have the playability of a baritone or guitar. The bass VI pickups give the instrument surprizingly adequate low tones. So Im leaning toward a low E at .080 and balanced to a high E .014 or .016. Im trying to find a company that can build such a set that has long enough strings to accommodate about a 44" string length for the high E.
