What the heck…? Player II Precision Tuners

Got a new Player II Precision yesterday and was giving it a going over, string change when I came upon this frankly puzzling (to be nice about it) design issue.

Fender: was it your intention to create this bizarre string/string retainer/tuning peg relationship caused by the choice to use tuners that do not allow strings to wrap around the bottom of the peg? A drag to have to replace these right out of the box but I see no other solution.

Do strings ever wrap around the bottom of any tuner? I've never encountered that. Not once, in 25 years.

I seem to recall that the hour glass type shape has been prevalent for a long time. At some point some tuners had a tapered post to the bottom, which I thought was a great idea, but then it disappeared. I agree with your assessment that the Player II tuners need to go in the dumpster.

A spiral-cut replacement post that holds the string down. As the string is wrapped around the post the spiral cut draws the string down.

Yeah, depending on how many wraps you give it, it'll push its way to the bottom. I don't normally give my strings more than a wrap or two. You seem to like to spend much more time winding than I do.

If you're wondering, wonder why after 70 years of having to rig it why won't they tilt the headstock? Don't anyone say it's not a better idea because Les Pauls break when you drop them on the head.
Acknowledging the problem by throwing a quick hack at it is fine for the first release. Fix it. It will stil be a Fender. It won't hurt the brand.

Ha, I've preaching from the rooftops about this dumb idea for years.

Idiotic designs like this prove to me that the people who make these types of marketing choices don't actually use their own products. Gimme a set of Hipshots with straight posts any day.

Those are interesting, but in reality they're an answer to a "problem" that doesn't actually exist (IMO). They do at least illustrate the need for getting the string wraps as low as possible on the posts, and not overlapping each other, so there's that.

If you're wondering, wonder why after 70 years of having to rig it why won't they tilt the headstock?

At the very least, move the A machine head a couple mm to the front so we don't get a buzz whenever the string isn't entirely wrapped down the post.
As for the "new" tuners, I'm sure they managed to tune the instruments a few times before getting to sales and they probably work fine.

I want the plain cylindrical posts that let you wrap all the way to the bottom. Part of this is because I dislike cutting strings, and partly because I like as strong as witness point as possible. Tapered post inhibit this.

Cool design -- truth told, I'd be happy enough with posts that didn't create multiple break points and actively PREVENT what you want to achieve!

Do you have any functional issue? Do they hold the tuning? Do they buzz because not enough pressure on the nut?

There's nothing wrong with the design of those tuner posts,
but there may be something wrong about their selection to use with that thickness of headstock.
They would be just fine with a thicker headstock.
