It's always coming through my speakers but I didn't realize it showed up on recordings until I plugged in a stratocaster and fired up a clean amp sim. You'll hear it. What is it?

All that static and feedback. That's the guitar direct into a Focusrite 2i4, USB into the computer. Like I said, I often hear it through my speakers or headphones but this is the first time I remember it coming through on a recording.

I am 66 and I can hear it:)

It seemed to lessen at the end of track and go in and out a few times to my old ears.

I can make only guesses here; Sounds to me to be either some kind of electrical interference outside your equipment since you also hear it with speakers [amp] or problem with electronics in your Guitar.

Have you tried another Guitar?

I hear it - sounds to me like interference from your computer's CPU/GPU or screen. Although it could be any number of things - unbalanced instrument cables, DC power supplies, mobile phones, a wifi router, ground loop, another device, etc. I recall a thread here a few months back where the guy narrowed it down to a faulty transformer on the street in front of his house.

I have, but all of my other instruments are either very well shielded active basses or I'm running them through insane amounts of distortion such that it doesn't matter.

Thanks, that makes sense as to why I would hear it (very quietly) through amps, etc, too, but this is the first time I've been able to hear it on a recording.

You can spend the next month(s) of your life unplugging lamps, modems, TVs, refrigerators, relocating your workspace, replacing dimmer switches, rewiring your guitar, cycling in and out any number of hardware snake oil devices, etc. etc. etc.

Or you can buy this on sale for $30 right now.

Your call.

You dare deprive me of hours of fun DIY projects?

Thank you ;)

Computer power supply, I think.

Or grounding/shielding problem in the computer.

Is it a laptop or floor/table cpu?

if it's a laptop, are you using original manufacturer power supply or an after market one? (toshiba and dell make great psus, the amazon off brand ones have terrible audio noise problems specially over usb audio..., for examples I have personally experienced and verified).

If it's a box cpu type comptuer with separate monitor/keyboard/mouse, is the case closed? Is it stock or have there been modifications made? Is it a big name unit or a cheap brand? Is it custom built?

I can't go too far into diagnosing it depending on your answers to these questions, but I can maybe help guide you in the right direction at least.

I hear it clear as day. RF/EM interference. Your signal chain (starting at pickups) is picking up something in your immediate vicinity. Try moving away from the computer screen if you are close (esp if you have single coil pickups), trying turning off lights. See if that makes any difference. If you have your phone nearby, move it away from you. If you still hear it, you’re going to need a Faraday cage!

I hear it, it sounds like a guitar...
