What to do around Tokyo and the countryside?

I know some of the folks here are travelers. I will soon be heading to Tokyo for a few days of meetings, followed by three days to sightsee.

Are there some good suggestions about things to do and see in that free time? I want to get out and see a bit of the country. I'll need to use public transportation.

I took the train down to Kamakura, which was pretty amazing.

I would say stay in Tokyo (enough to see and experience...).
Or visit MtFuji or Nikko (can be done in a daytrip).

Eat. Of all the Asian countries I have been to, by far Tokyo had the best food. Also, unlike other countries, I never had to worry about getting food poisoning there. The restaurants were very clean and tidy.

My Bride & I will be meeting our daughter and her family for 3 weeks split twixt Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo...that's come the last of November!
So far, I've figured out that the autumn weather will feel more like Montreal than Atlanta...

I hope there are some good ideas for both of us.

I'll be in Tokyo for three days of meetings and available in the evenings; my wife will be free all day. After meetings conclude, we'll have three days to travel and sightsee.

Tokyo is an incredible city, I spent a week there at the start of a tour a few years ago and it absolutely blew my mind. Tokyo Tower, Imperial palace and gardens, Shinjuku/Shibuya at night are some things that stick in my mind but it's very much a city you can just wander round and investigate. Enjoy!

@Pilgrim three days is plenty of time to hop on a Shinkansen for a day trip down to Kyoto/Osaka. I live not too far from Nagoya, and there's really not a whole lot to see there.

There's tons of natural spots to see all over Japan, but without a car or taking a bus, you're kind of limited to what the cities have to offer.

My recommendation... Kyoto day(or 2) trip.

Have sushi at Sushi Sei Annex in the fish market.
See Godzilla in Shinjuku.
If you are adventurous, wander around Akihabra.
If you have money, go shopping in Ginza.

Here's one thing I know...
This is an educational And entertaining read!

Ochanomizu is a must just to check out all the bass/guitar shops and it's right next to Akihabara. Shibuya is tremendously amazing...lots of shopping and Tower Records among many other things. I found that Kyoto was too far to make a day trip out of it...make it 2 days to make it worth it. If you're looking for a place away from the big cities I would suggest Kakegawa. It was really quiet when we went and they have an amazing bird park, Kakegawa Kachouen. It's about an hour and a half each way on the Shinkansen. It's so fun to take the Shinkansen anywhere and just admire all of the beautiful landscapes and mountains.

Keep your eyes open as well. I saw Megadeth waiting to get on the same shinkansen as me. I commented to my colleague "I remember when they were famous". I think Japan is where old heavy metal acts go to die.

If you take the Nozomi Shinkansen to Kyoto it's a little less than 2 1/2 hours station to station.

There's also Tokyo Disneyland not too far away. But be prepared for insanely long lines and wait times if you go.
