Heya all!

I have a Warwick Thumb 5 thats way too heavy in the neck....... as many others have mentioned!:hmm:
Id like to flick it off but what do i replace it with?
I like the sound.
I like the neck width.
I like the price (or less).
I dont like the weight, short body/long neck....

What do you peeps say is a comparable instrument that stacks up?:bassist:

I don't think much compares to the thumb. reason being the combo of woods and pickup placement.

I battled this for a while as well. I just got the widest leather strap I could find, and rolled with it. The wider the better. I personally think it helped by at least 70%, but YMMV.

I have tried all sorts of straps, wide as you can get and those silly crossover straps. Tried diff strap heights too. Nothing stops the neck from diving so im wasting energy supporting it with my left hand....

I have hed this bass for a few years and played reg corp gigs (60 a yr) most being 4 sets long. Sore left shoulder by the end.....

I have considered getting radical and somehow extending the upper horn by about 6". This would detract from its value but make it easier to play, i'd hope. Anyone ever heard of this being done successfully?

Thanks for the replies so far! Keep the thinking caps on as i want to do something with this bass soonish, it just sits around.....

I feel for you. I owned a Warwick Thumb 5 NT which I played for exactly one gig. LOVED the tone, but I just couldn't handle the weight (~14 pounds), neck dive, and ergonomics. I literally couldn't read the first fret heheh. I haven't found a suitable replacement. I think the Streamer Stage 2 might get close though.

You could always consider a custom shop warwick. I bet they could do the Thumb body wood and pickup position on a Streamer Stage 2 body.

I already have a MMSR5. It needs new elecs though. It has cheapo BassLines pups and elecs in it now....very woofy, undefined sound..... Poor thing was butchered in a previous life :hmm: It will rise again though.
I do think MM and Thumb are very diff basses though...

They are! they are completely different i just think everyone should own atleast one! lol Honestly the thumb bass is one of those basses that nothing else can touch, there may be basses better than it but no bass like it! hence it being unique. I remember seeing somewhere that you can change the strap buttons location(same as a T-bird) and it will help level it out. take a look for either a thread about that, or google it. And the weight is something that comes with great tone:(
