What top for walnut

Is this to be fretted or fretless? Regardless, Black Walnut by itself really squeezes out the midrange. I've done both bass and guitars with all-walnut bodies and they seemed a bit on-dimensional in tone for me. Cosmetically AND sonically, I love a Walnut body with a thicker (3/8" +) Maple top... preferably Quilted, Flamed or Birdseye. Spalted Maple looks amazing but it's usually too soft to contribute much tonally. Ebony boards with Figured Maple tops on a Walnut or Bubinga body are my favorites!

Interesting. No lack of mids on my all walunt Spector. Probably the best tonally balanced bass I own. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy another all walnut bass.

Wow, after seeing this, I like walnut even more. I'm really hoping I can get walnut for the body, hopefully it won't be too expensive to special order. Still not sure if I want just a solid slab or a top, but I definitely know I want walnut. I don't suppose there'd be a way to get an estimate on the cost of getting a walnut body? I'd contact the builder, but I'm not ready to start building for a couple months yet, so I'd rather be ready before trying to get an exact quote.

Either way, some truly fantastic basses here.

LOL! My bad... When I said "Squeezes Out The Midrange" I meant it to imply that it ENHANCES the Midrange (Squeezing it out so you can hear it better), as I've experienced in several Walnut basses I own. Walnut seems to be consistently a Midrange Monster!

Walnut is such a beautiful wood. Solid as well - doesn't dent like my mahogany Ibanez.

Birdseye maple looks great over walnut, along with the really nice ziricote fingerboard; sounds great, too.

That's what I rely on them for. I also like that (unlike some other woods) Walnut has a more dramatic effect on the bass's tone, even on a Neck-Thru where the center billet is of a different species.
