No judgement on your son, just remember being that age. You want a bullet proof amp that can get loud if needed. I would look at a used GK 700RB-II. Usually around $350 used. Put it on a 2x15 or 4x10 like an older Peavey TVX, Ampeg, GK, etc. It's a pro level head, and he's young enough to move around the cab, and it should last through college.

I’d say GK. 700RB for $300 and choice of GK cab for another $300. Another option would be the powered combos. Use a small combo when needed, add the powered speaker cabinets for more volume when necessary. Excellent modular rig that has fantastic tone and can last for as many years as he needs if taken care of.

I keep seeing Ampeg PF500 on top of a PF115HE for about $500 on Craigslist. Small enough to move around easily. Sounds great, looks great, gets loud and could be expanded with another PF cab if he wants.

I've been playing for 40 years and have tried a lot of different brands. I like Ampeg, Gallien Krueger and Hartke and never had much luck getting a good sound with Peavey, Fender, Ashdown or Eden.

+1 on the Fender rumble 500 head with a 410 rumble cabinet. Should be easy to find used and easy to try in a shop.

I purchased my head and cab through the GC used website. GK 1001RBII for about $350 and a Peavey Headliner 410 for $150.

The problem with our situation is the warranty refund is on GC gift card.

Okay, then how about: A new PF 500 is $400. A used Ampeg SVT15E cab should run about $200. Warranty is a big deal on electronics, not so much on cabs. I run the smaller PF350 with one or two SVT15Es. It is perfect for what I do. The 350 is no slouch but has less tone control than the 500


EDIT: the PF500 is on sale at GC for $325. I'd buy one of these right now and worry about the cab later.

This is bad. I am totally turning into a helicopter dad, but buying bass gear really turns me on. I just checked the Fender Rumble 500. They have a Rumble 500 combo for $400 and a matching 410 cab for $250 at the same store, 4 hours away. I am going to ask him if he would be able to drive out and pick it up. This saves shipping costs, and keeps us near budget. Anyone want to double down on their suggestion, or does a 6x10 500 watt setup trump everything else?

I'd go for a used 4x10 for sure because it's virtually impossible to steal. College and dorms or apartments are very high risk for theft. Doors get left open all the time...constant in an out by dorms and outside people alike....etc.

Update: he just said the 6x10 setup would be too much, but liked the 4x10. That brings back a lot of the options on this discussion. So I will tap the brakes and reset Monday.
