What was it like playing your 1st gig?

frat party. i was only invited to step in and play four songs which i had practiced a few times. it was kind of a blur and i wasnt sure if i was playing well or not, but i came to the decision that i was gonna play what i wanted to play and not worry about it. and that i did and after i was done this girl i knew came up to me and said i played well or something i go yeah right thanks sarcastically and she looked at me goes no really i enjoyed listening to you we were dancing. so that made me feel good about it.. kinda funny how far a few encouraging words can go..

we all know how it felt - how could anyone forget their first gig?

I'm still stuck on the part of the friendship where you think you love one of your friends who is a girl, but you're not sure an' then she becomes more distant and you don't know what to do. It really sucks. :bassist: :ninja: :hiding: :crying: :hiding: :ninja: :bassist:

I'm not sure if she likes me or what. She's doing the same thing my privies girlfriends did, but she also only kisses her boyfriend when I'm around. My friends walk by her and her boyfriend and she doesn't kiss him, but when she sees me she starts to kiss her boyfriend right away. Some times she even has to move her boyfriends head to do so, and every time they start to make out she just stares at me as if to say 'What'd ya think of this!?'. Its too confusing!!!   :help:

You should really start a new thread on this.

I was 13yrs old. It was magical. Nervous and excited, had an awesome time. Don't remember how I played (been 43 yrs ago), did not seem as important. I can remember wearing huge bell bottoms, red white and blue converse tennis shoes. Shirt was a long tee shirt with an american flag on it. Pretty hip I might say.

Wish I had clothes like that. I like the retro look.

My 1st gig was many years ago (1974) at a jr. high gym as a favor for the lead players gf brother. He used to come over and watch us jam so we agreed to do it. We were 19, 20, & 23 and were the absolute worst fit for the gig. Although gf brother and his buddies dug it, most of the kids wanted to hear the top 40 hits of the week. We played blues and older rock tunes (Cream, Hendrix, Winter). The crowd wasn't into it and about an hour into the gig. Some kids got ahold of a marker and started throwing gym towels which they monogrammed with "YOU SUCK" at us. We loved it and it just caused us to get more insulting. We were using the school PA and at about the 2 hour mark the principal pulled the plug on the PA. So then we just started some instrumental jams. After 10 minutes of that the power was turned off. We were hooked.

How could you go wrong with Hendrix!?!?!? What was the top 40 back then?

I started playing bass when I was 15; I played my first gig just before I turned 16. My friend Rick's father, Bill, was a professional guitarist. I had been jamming with Rick for about 6 months when his dad asked us if we would like to play a couple of tunes at an 'Old-timer's' hockey event that he and his band were playing. I had a Traynor 50 watt Bass Master and a 215 cab. As this amp wasn't powerful enough to play in a hockey arena, I borrowed Eddie the bassist's Acoustic bass amp. At that time, I was playing an El Degas bass; it was a copy of a Fender Broadcaster, I believe. I wasn't a bad bass, but it wasn't particularly good, either. Eddie was kind enough to loan me his P-bass, as well. I had been playing for just 4 months: I was scared to death! Eddie saw how nervous I was and kind of took me under his wing :). He told me to hang on until the end of the first song; he said that once I heard that applause, I'd be fine. And I'd be hooked. My knees nearly gave out, walking up the steps to the stage...

And he was right. I felt fine after that. In fact, I felt great! My first gig, and I got paid $20, too :). I have been playing bass for 35 years, as of this month, and I have never looked back. It is my wish, and my hope, that every beginner on the bass meets someone as kind and helpful to them, as Eddie was to me. His practical help and good advice encouraged me to stick with it, practice, and persevere. I try to pay it forward whenever I can. Thanks, Eddie.

Sounds like you got lucky. :smug:

Haha...I was in 8th grade with fellow 8th graders. We opened for a slightly older powerpop band (2 years older) that was popular with young people. We covered one of their songs, and also played Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet, The Kids Aren't All Right by Offspring, Stacy's Mom (?), and a couple of superawesome originals.

My first bar gig was interesting. I ended up playing for the powerpop band we opened for above when the bass player headed off to join another band. I was 17, nervous as hell, and looked pretty out of place since the other guys were all in college. I was standing around because I didn't know anyone, and some guy asked me if I was a roadie. :eyebrow: Then we started playing, and the owner (who was waay cool) comes over with Jager bombs for the band. I dutifully took mine only to find another one at my feet five minutes later. Owner keeps telling us in a drunk slur how much she loves us and how she's gonna buy us a shot (after 3 bombs). I had a blast, got kinda drunk, and ended up making out with a cute girl at the afterparty (who was 19, got in the bar on her own terms). Great night!!

I cant remember my first gig, maybe it was me playing guitar with a drum machine in a talent show or something. I still play 25 years later so it couldn't have gone that badly. My first steady gig was awesome. Playing traditional Gaelic music at a historical theme park for a summer as a teenager for some pretty decent cash for the time. Though i did get crapped on and attacked by a lot of seagulls. Stranger things have happened on gigs since though.
