What was YOUR First amp >Compared to What you have now!

This is a circle unbroken. I started as a guitar player and moved over to bass in college. I did trade for a hacked up Kent bass because it came with a small cube of a speaker cabinet and a Blond tolex brownfaced Fender bassman head. Went through Silverfaced Bassman head and a weird cab with 1 12 then went for an Ampeg B115 which in 1974 was not the same amp you might see today. Then in rapid succession I had the big O as we called it, an Acoustic 360 although it was real impractical for the small lounges we were doing but just in case... Then I got rid of the Acoustic and got a SVT with a fridge for the road. When I got rid of the Ampeg I downsized to a tiny Barcus Berry amp and then it gets real wierd and it settles out with SWR studio 220 into Goliath II jr. A bad Hartke experience and an Ampeg B2R are my only dalliance from SWR in almost 20 years. Now its back to an amp and a 1 12. SWR 350X and Avatar sb112

My first amp was a Gitacord combo. It was about 70w and had 2 channels (2 bassist could connect on it), it even had a microphone input. It was very good to start with and play along with my teacher, but it had a crappy sound. :)

Now i use a beast: GK 700 rbII head and a Peavey TVX 410 cab. :smug:

First amp (2005): GK MB200 bought (very) used from a buddy. Too sentimental to get rid of it.

New, current rig: Street Justice! SWR WorkingPro 700 pumping tha funk into twin Avatar B210s of evil. With a Midiverb II in the rack for those freaky nights. Avert your eyes!

I can't believe how many people on here started out with such good stuff. I had the EXTREME GHETTO rig. A late 70's 5watt harmony guitar amp, and a mid 60's airline bass, with a neck so warped, I almost gave up playing bass altogether. The harmony did make some amazing "fuzz" distortion, if turned up past say 25%. It didn't even have an overdrive, it was just overdriving the pathetic little 6" speaker with the 1oz magnet. Nowadays, I've stepped up just a bit. I eventually threw the airline in the trash, (where it belonged) as it didn't even have a truss. I don't know what happened to the amp....garage sale $1, I suppose. But I couldn't be happier with my current setup. It's a no excuses, faithfully reproducing show of what I can do, (and what I can't);););)
But I really think that starting off with, and trying to make music with crap, can make you more appreciative of superior equipment once you have the means to purchase it.

But after various mullard kits and elac eliptical speakers some sealing wax and string.
A Marshall Plexi with Home made 4 X 12 and Selmer goliath 1X18

The early seventies where even more blurred and colored than my amps.
