Back in 1996, my guitar-playing brother decided that he needed a bassist, so he placed an Eclipse 4 string bass on lay-away as a birthday gift to me. I had no choice but to pay the balance and start learning. I saved up money and went out to buy a Peavey TNT combo. Then, I was off and running!
I've never heard of that brand of bass since then, but it served it's purpose until I could save for a five-string awhile later. I learned the ropes on that bass and started my first band with it too.

I started playing in 1971 at the age of 11. My parents rented me a Kingston Jazz Bass
wanna be for three months to see if I would stick with it, horrible piece of work it's a wonder I did!The bass pictured is one I bought off ebay a few years ago, just as bad as I remember! My first real bass was a Klira my folks bought me for my birthday. I remember the day in great detail, the ride there with my Dad, the exchange with the sales man at the House Of Guitars, seeing and picking up the Klira for the first time and the joyous ride home. I still have the bass one of my prized possessions. Unfortunatley I tried to "improve" the bass with Gibson SB pickups when I was young. Here she is on the right with a few others that have followed me home over the years.

Mine was a second hand Howard bass guitar with black nylon strings. They were very comfortable on my fingers. My amp was a Lafayette combo with a single 15" speaker.
Boy, these are bringing back memories. It is amazing that a lot of us kept it up playing the pieces of crap we played. Bad action, bad electronics and bad looks but hey we made it and kept generations inspired to do the same.

My first one was a no-name Beatle bass in the early '70s. I was a guitarist and didn't take to the bass then. In the early '90s I got an Electra Phoenix Bass, and this time I stuck with it. I played a church production of Godspell with that bass, then got my first P-Bass. Kinda wish I still had the Phoenix, which I sold to a coworker.
I played the bass lines to "Hey Joe" on a Vox Shadow 6-string at the 8th grade talent show.
First real bass was an Eko violin bass, wish I still had that one.

My first bass was a Fender jazz copy called a Mirana. It had a natural finish, maple board with block inlays, tort guard, and was set up horribly! It was stolen whe my house was robbed years ago. I am fortunate enough to have a bunch of basses and guitars now, but still miss that bass,... I know I could make her play like a million bucks knowing what I know now 35 years later.. Was just at my folks last week and going through some old pics, came across one of it. Really wish I had it.
