What was your first bass guitar?

My first bass was a solid black Lotus with P & J style pickups. I live in a small town in rural southwest Georgia. This was in 1989 and one of the only things for kids to do was to ride our bikes into “town” and play 1 of 2 video games at the tiny grocery store. One day I was riding my bike past the little pawnshop and saw the bass hanging in the window. I’m not sure why, but I knew I had to have it. I was too young for a job but I noticed they had lots of Native American arrowheads on display. I knew of a place right along a creek just outside of town where some land had been cleared and I had found several arrowheads there. I worked out a deal where I could pay for the bass with arrowheads I found. So I made a sifter out of an old washing machine tub and some poles off an old swing set and started digging/sifting. Over the next few weeks I probably gave them $10,000 worth of arrowheads for that cheap bass! They were always happy to see me come in! But I loved it and knew I was supposed to have it and learn to play. Being young I took it apart and pulled the frets out and various other things until it ended up in pieces. I eventually got other bases and lost track of the Lotus pieces so I threw away what was left. Id love to find another one someday.

The universe sure can be a strange place. I’ve been looking unsuccessfully for another Lotus bass for over 20 years. Shortly after my original post I found this and bought it immediately!

An early 80's Aria Pro II SB-R60. I wish I had never sold that thing. Truly one of those "what was I thinking" moments. When my mom bought it for me around 83 from a tiny local shop they were just like any other production bass. This is the exact model but not mine. Link Removed

I've only seen them on computer screens, but they are gorgeous and look to be very well made. I really like this single pickup model. The inlays are cool too. What were you thinking? ;) ;) ;) I shouldn't tease, I've had at least one of those moments myself!
