What was your first bass guitar?

After a couple of copies I bought one of these, not this particular one.

dont have it anymore.
Now 40 years later i have this in the brood, don't gig anymore.

The one on the right is a 24 fret copy with 320d custom shop electronics on board.

after playing in 2 bands using long-term loaner bass, i bought my first bass - a squier P bass with P/J pickups that - as you can see - i added a thumb rest to.

~ 1976 I had a rental Univox, not sure if the model, but it was black with a reverse offset body, two pickups.

Then it was a ‘76-‘77 Bradley Jazz Bass copy with a natural finish. Still have it, in some form.

The first nice one I owned was a new 1978 Rick 4001, autumn glow. Still have it.

80's Vantage Double-P.
My mom's then BF gave me $100 for xmas to find an instrument. He played some guitar and knew I wanted to play bass. Went to a friend's dad's pawnshop (that friend was also my first drummer) and scored.

I remember it being very heavy before I knew that basses could be. Also had a tiny 1" strap that dug into my shoulder. Didn't learn how to do a setup for 20 years so also remember that thing having action measured in inches, not mm.

and yet I still miss it

I began on guitar. In Grade 12, I took Music class. For the first semester, I took it with my guitar. For the second semester, it was a requirement to take an instrument which read a different clef. I chose bass since the fretboards were similar already. I immediately felt love for the Bass and it became my main instrument from that point.

My first bass, which I needed to buy rather quickly, was a blue Vantage FV-575B Flying V Bass. It looked like this one. I don't own it anymore.

Guild B-301. Bought it in '80 with paper route money. Man, I wish I still had it. I had to hock it to buy plane tickets back home. More for nostalgia than anything else. Played some great shows with that one.....sigh.

My first bass was a Peavey Mileston 3. My parents bought me this starter pack back when I was about 12/13yrs old. It's got a small crack on the body at the neck and the laquer is all scuffed after years of my younger self abusing it with stickers. Changed the pickups last year to Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders and put on fresh strings. Would love to get it fixed up and take all the stickers off it.

“Mine” was my cousin’s 1960-something JB. I was an upright student/player originally, so he loaned me his (plus rolltop Kustom bass amp) so I could play bass for his band.

My very own first bass was a 1974 Gibson Ripper bought new in 1974. Still have it. Still all original. Still my favorite bass. (see my avatar too!)

Mine was an Squier Affinity Jazz Bass (part of the "Stop Dreaming Start Playing" bundle) All in all, it was a great place to start even though my early attempts at "setup" were disastrous to say the least. Fret buzz was my ever present friend (because who needs setup specs or a straight neck?).

Looked like this only green. Was missing 1 string,all the tuning peg buttons,scratchplate and the bridge cover.
Added bonus was a big hole at the pot area,stuffed with paper and covered with an unpainted plywood patch.
Pickup was held in by nails.
