What woods go well with walnut?

I have this lovely piece of figured walnut:

(It looks darker in real life)

and this neck:

My question is what wood should i make the body out of? It will be a solid-body P-J bass.

Maybe not a travesty. It's not a bad neck; I've certainly seen worse. But it's not an optimal aesthetic match for the walnut, that's for sure.

How thick is the walnut? Can you resaw it into a front & back? If so, then a contrasting core might be nice - alder, or maple perhaps. Or even basswood, if weight is a concern.

Or it could be the aviation term with the same acronym:

The barometric altimeter setting which will cause an altimeter to read zero when at the reference datum of a particular airfield (generally a runway threshold). In ISA temperature conditions the altimeter will read height above the datum in the vicinity of the airfield.

So I am going to buy a nicer neck, but I don't have the money now. I am building the body in my wood shop class at school next semester, and that is my only chance to build it because I can't afford tools. So, could i build the bass with my current neck and then sway it out in the future for a better neck since it is a bolt on?

You could always build a neck as part of it. There are 2 very good books that I would recommend, as would most of my colleagues.

And now, I will put on my librarian hat...

If they are not available in your library, then you can always get them through interlibrary loan. If you have not done ILL before ask your school librarian. I am sure he/she can help. And, he/she is probably working this summer. So, you can go to school this summer and ask.

To directly answer your very direct question: Yes, that is a perfectly valid strategy. However, as others have stated, if you're taking wood shop anyway, you may very well have ample time and resources to craft a neck to go with your body.
