What would you do with this (G&L content)?

This toasty G&L ASAT body auction is ending on eBay soon. It's currently under $20.00.

I'm a sucker for a fun project (as some may know already). I also really like Tele style basses and G&L as well.

Doing a search for G&L used bass parts on the interwebs results in zilch....nada. So I my thoughts turn to putting on a Fender neck (if possible), Hipshot bridge and sky's the limit on pickups....not sure what I would do there. I'm leaning passive though. Keep it simple.

Thoughts?

You can see on the backside just above the control cavity where the two pieces of wood are starting to separate. The heat from the fire caused it to start delaminating. I'd pass.
Believe it or not, it wasn't in a fire, somebody did a really poor job painting it and then used paint stripper...part way and then quit.

The separation should be able to be cured with some epoxy and a clamp.

It has that "barncaster" look I like.

This is $20 worth of wood.

Ok, yeah, there's a bridge mounted to it, and I did some shaping, sanding, and finishing, but I hope you get the point.

And it'll fit a standard Fender neck.

This is $20 worth of wood.

Not to argue, but if I purchased a $20 nice slab of wood and tried to make it into a usable bass guitar body, it would take me a week and would look like poop.

Refinishing and fixing some cracks for me is easy. Routing neck pockets and control cavities is a bit beyond my skill level.

I don't know, you did a pretty good job on that truss rod replacement on that Fender neck. I think you may be underestimating yourself.

I like it... It's got a nice melted rubber vibe.

If you do a G&L build, you gotta get a real G&L locking bridge; that's what makes it a G&L. IMHO

EDIT: If, as you say, it hasn't already been in a fire, perhaps a minute or two in a good camp fire might soften up some of those hard paint edges and blend things together.?.? Or, it might burn it up. ;)

I agree with you on the bridge.

BTW, I did get the body. $36 shipped.

I'm thinking L 1500 single pick up. Probably keep it simple and wire it passive. I tried a L1500 not too long ago and it was more then enough tone for me.

i'm going to g&l on friday in fullerton to begin the process of having my new three bolt LB100 neck made, we are going to do a little investigating first though to determine the metal used for my sb-2 neck's frets and the actual profile of my 83 L2k which was almost exactly the same as the LB100, but not quite, just a little narrower and a little flatter, i'm getting a neck made, because it's actually going to be more of a fun field trip that i can photograph for my professional portfolio
