What would you do with this (G&L content)?

I'm a sucker for a fun project (as some may know already). I also really like Tele style basses and G&L as well.

Doing a search for G&L used bass parts on the interwebs results in zilch....nada. So I my thoughts turn to putting on a Fender neck (if possible), Hipshot bridge and sky's the limit on pickups....not sure what I would do there. I'm leaning passive though. Keep it simple.

Ok. Thinking of modifying a P bass pick guard and routing the foward pick up area for a split P pickup. What do you think?

Also thinking of keeping the bass as is. It's sort of cool in a Joe Strummer Tele kind of way.

I like the p pickup idea, but I think you should build a custom pick guard or have someone build one for you. But by the time you pay for all that or put in all that work, you may as well just buy the correct pickup for it. I mean those g&l pickups are really great.

Ya, maybe scrap the P bass pick up idea. I like simplicity and I also like the sound of early 90's L1000's just fine so maybe this arrangement (just a mock up using a fender neck). I'd probably add a soft wood plug for the empty bridge pick up cavity.

Make sure you get plenty of shots of the neck filing/final assembly station (my desk when I worked there) :)

Update time.

The old rotten finish came off so easily with a random orbital sander I've decided to refinish it. Mostly because I've used a "Dutchman" to fill the bridge pickup cavity which wouldn't look good if I left it natural.

So I've grain filled and primed and will probably just do a simple black spray job with clear coat because that's what I have kicking around. Not getting too fancy with this, but I am digging this bass body. I love semi hollowbodies, so it will be nice to have another one in the stable.

The measure of success is truely yours! If you made something, essentially out of nothing. You like how it feels, looks and plays!! I would call that a huge success. Well played, you saved something that would have been otherwise dead!

Thanks. It's utilitarian in look that's for sure, but I do dig it.

I used an old wiring harness out of a 95 American P bass and for some reason the combination of G&L pickup, hollowbody, and tone control make this bass very versatile in tone.
