That would make me return it - listed as new.
I'm so anal-retentive that it would bother the XXXX out of me, since it's a new bass.

It was sold as "new" but looks like it was perhaps a floor model . A whole thread a while back about this and practices of a particular brick and mortar store in doing this.
What you have is not a new bass fresh from the factory, untouched by anyone else, unless it's a factory-second that was dinged up during it's manufacture. In either case, no, you wouldn't be out of line in sending it back or if the bass otherwise works great, ask for a discount.
As above, I'm not particular about things like this even when buying new, I don't mistreat my basses, but my rationale is that you play them and dings or scratches will eventually be on the bass. Most of the basses I buy are used for this reason, less to worry about and also getting the bass for less money. However, you are within your rights to expect more in terms of condition as you're paying for it.

I do. But the first one I had was irreparable. The pickup was broken. They replaced it with this one and there's a gouge in the fretboard and all gouges that the factory have covered up with the finish.
Through the clear coat or could you buff it out?
It's entirely possible to get a flawless replacement that you don't like as much. It's a gamble.
That’s not new, and I wouldn’t pay a new price for it. Used, in maybe very good condition, I’d pay that price — if I liked the bass. Otherwise, it’s going back.
The body wouldn’t bug me, but the neck sure would. Return!
I bought a new bass online from a reputable English store. When I got it I noticed a couple of small scratches around the rear plate. Probably someone removed the plate with a screw driver or something, to check the batteries.
I sent them an email explaining it, with photos and they offered me the chance of returning or a 40 pounds credit. Took the credit, couldn't care less about the scratch. But a new instrument is a new instrument. Has to be immaculate. Send them an email, see a what they say about it.

Sensible ? Yes. I'd be upset as well. Call and talk to a manager and offer to send pics.

If you can work with it I would call the store or whomever and get a significant discount. I've done that a few times.

I’d call them, have them cross ship a replacement. I’d be pretty pissed until it’s resolved. Be tough on them. They like to push people around.
1 time I rcvd a p bass from sweet water. It had swirls from what looked like polishing with a dirty cloth. They are minor, still there and it doesn’t bother me. That’s my main studio axe so nobody really sees it anyway. They did offer a replacement but I declined.

It's strange because the dents aren't superficial. They're beneath the finish, so it's happened during production, but it's been finished over. Either way, it's a manufacturing fault and should have been sold as B-Stock.
Bumping this comment because it's important. If it feels good and plays well, I'd consider keeping it. With a return, you might end up with a pristine condition dog. But then, dings don't bother me much, so it's your call.
- i would make my decision based on playability alone. period. it plays the way i want or i don't need it. looks are a different matter: i don't like the looks of several of my axes...but they play so great = i live with the ugly.
- i get the bit about doing your own 'dinging' and that you'd like to start with something perfect, pristine. but they all have imperfections! somewhere, somehow.
- some folks wouldn't say beans if they had a mouthful --- except here! they want you to do what they fantasize they'd do.
- if the ax doesn't feel good when you play it = it doesn't make any difference what it looks like brand new, with or without imperfections. i'd keep any ax that 'spoke to me'...i'd make sure it would never be abused by a wannabe...it would be mine!

Sounds like a b-stock being sold without stating it is a b-stock. Good discount or send it back would be my response.
