all words have positive and negative connotations. there are many synonyms and even qualifiers like 'little white lie' to handle nuance. have you ever had to answer an awkward question like 'do these pants make my butt look big?' please note, i use this example only because it is the obligatory, cliched example of why it is ok to mislead people a little bit sometimes in some circumstances. consider how much money eric clapton made off the statement 'you look wonderful tonite.' and yes, for the most part it is harmless.
but i agree with you, this issue seems far more built up and contentious than i would expect. i don't see where anyone has posted, however, that if you deny the santa-story to your kids you have destroyed their imagination. i think there is plenty of room for layers of grey here.
as for claiming it to be something it is not... have you considered how much we lie to ourselves regularly? look down, how often do you think about the children in the sweatshops that made the clothes and shoes you are most likely wearing? do you think about it when you go buy a bag of way-too-cheap socks? do you think about the meat-packing industry, the slaughter, the disease, the systematic oppression of undocumented workers when you pick up the nice, clean piece of meat packed in the plastic wrap? how about pron? do you think about the sex-slave industry and human trafficking involved. the runaway teen girls that are purposefully addicted to drugs and lied to so they will remain in effective bondage to the industry? kinda takes the fun and fantasy out of it.
the world can be seen as a very, very dark place. heck, if i am gonna go this far, how bout the fact that we humans are such a tiny little blip in the grand scheme of the cosmos that really there is no point whatsoever to getting up and going to work each day. what a total waste of your time!
i think people need hope. and no, santa is not required for hope. it can come from many different places. but i bet wherever one finds it, it includes some level of 'lie.'
have a nice day!
