i want to live in a society where people are allowed to do that. I also want to live in a society where there aren't ***hats who would. 
I should clarify, I guess I am asking more as a moral judgment rather than a strict legal one. Perhaps the better question is: "do you think that's an acceptable thing to do?".
It's definitely a **** move and would be done in poor taste, but Voltaire had the right idea about this sort of thing.
Why not? I wouldn't have a problem with it. I do have a problem with perpetuating lies to our children. What's wrong with telling our children the truth about things? I told my kids the truth, and they turned out just fine.
I think that the point is this, sort of.
Would you have rather had someone else tell your children this truth? Maybe you wouldnt have minded, as it is your perogative to inform your children of the truth, but many parents would not stand for it. They would rather perpetuate the childhood fantasy until their child is old enough to form their own opinions, IMO, as it should be (up to the parent, not society).
Why wouldn't they be able to? I've got to look at "Keep Christ in Christmas" bumper stickers all the time.
If it's because our kids might learn something from outside the home that we choose not to explain ( painting broad strokes here and not saying YOU or anyone here does that ). That's 99% of most information parents try to hide from their kids isn't it? Drugs, sex, swearing and any other nasty thing we try to "protect" them from. Do you think the sign would be the only place that information would be supplied to our kids from? By the time a child is able to read that, they already know.
Sorry, but I disagree. I see no reason at all why as a society we should keep lying to our children. Maybe some parents don't mind lying to their kids, but IMO that's not setting a very good example. What else are they going to believe in the future?
Disagree with what? I didnt really state any sort of stance to be disagreed with.
Do you deny that some parents would rather their child believe in Santa until an age they deem appropriate for the truth to be told?
My personal belief on the matter is quite similar to yours, only I wouldnt want to spoil the myth for someone elses kids. Its not my place.
But this position comes from the presumption that the parents have already perpetuated a fantasy. There are actually two separate questions at issue here:
1) Is it okay for someone other than a child's parents to tell that child the "truth"?
2) is it okay for a parent to tell a child an "untruth"?

Sure. They also teach them about all sorts of things. Doesn't make it right.
Why not? I wouldn't hesitate to tell my grandchildren the truth. After all, don't they have a right to know?
