The back story: (which I'm considering starting a fresh thread for) as I'm restoring my 72 P bass which I've had for 35+ years. I was not the original owner and previous owner had done somewhat of a goofy mod and added a double jazz pickup by the bridge. Anyway without going into too much detail here, I'm filling in the rout and having Marty Bell refinish in a stock color to make it a true P bass again. So the other day I removed all the electronics and now have a pair of jazz pickups I can now use elsewhere. One was original to the mod that was done (prior to 77 when I obtained the bass, likely around 75). I'm thinking that is the one with the 6 digit stamp. The other is slightly newer as seeing the different pickups reminded me when I brought this bass for a fret job to Roger Sadowsky (back in the day when you could walk into his shop in NYC and just talk to him and he actually did the fret work, btw to this day this neck still plays incredible and much of the reason I'm redoing the body). Anyway he went through the bass and determined that one of the original J pickups that was used in the mod was dead and put in something he had around that was similar. So...
The 6 digit stamped I0 45 76 (yes the first character really looks like an I rather than a 1)and has black ribbon,
While the 4 digit 7360 has copper ribbon
And appears newer than the other although it would have to be no newer than around 82 as that was around the time I think Sadowsky did the fret job.
So if anyone has any thoughts as to if these pickups are worth putting into a different Jazz bass as they won't be needed on this P bass obviously any longer or if frankly they aren't anything that special and would be outperformed by something new I'd be interested in your thoughts.
Thanks.
