That was good. My mom lived in that area near Garberville (right next the the Reggae on the River site). Spent a lot of time there - and gigged in the area (Benbow, Jazz on the Lake, Mateel Center, etc) - and certainly was interesting to see that other perspective.

Just watched Shiny Happy People on Amazon Prime, which was also very good, if also twisted.



Similar to that was Wild, Wild Country on Netflix which was also very good.

The first three episodes of the new season of Black Mirror are not good. The first one is a rip off mashup of a few older, much better episodes, and ends predictably and unsatisfyingly. The second one started off potentially interesting and fizzled out. The third one with Jesse Pinkman wasn't awful, but was a total waste of an interesting idea. There are some really great episodes of this show and too many okay ones and a few that aren't good at all. This guy needs to branch out and work with other writers. He writes every episode and his hit to miss ratio isn't good.

For those of us who watched the CW TV series, we've already seen the whole Flashpoint story line. Why in the world would we want to see a Power Ranger wannabe play out the story again? :laugh:

I never saw that show but I've heard it's good and most of this story was done on the show. It was still entertaining though. Michael Keaton was good. I'll watch anything he's in. Although, 70-something year old Batman still kicking ass was more believable than the hairpiece he had on.

After 4 of the 5 episodes, largely agree. I liked the first episode more than you but mainly disappointed that this season has largely devolved into pretty conventional horror - even if with good production values - rather than the social commentary of modern tech's imparts on society as a sort of more contemporary Twilight Zone

Wow. I started Shiny Happy People. I never fail to be shocked by how horrible humans can be to each other.

I liked the first one a lot till the end. That actress was good and I liked the story being told, until I saw where they went with it, which was nowhere. I watched the first half of the 4th episode this morning before work and read what happens on wikipedia just now.
She's a ******* werewolf?
No. No sir. That's not what Black Mirror is.

Yeah, episode 4 was particularly dumb - and easy to see the big reveal coming.

On episode 1 (minor spoiler) I like the device of story within a story in Russian nesting doll fashion. Still the best for this IMO is the film The Saragossa Manuscript (Rekopis znaleziony w Saragossie) from 1965. Makes Inception look juvenile in contrast.

I've only watched the first 3, but I enjoyed all of them. I thought Aaron Paul was fantastic in his episode. One thing I do appreciate is that the first 3 eps aren't as dependent on futuristic tech as some of the others in the series. And I thought the alternate timeline of 1969 in the Aaron Paul ep was an interesting premise.

That's kind of the thing, they have so much promise - clearly has budget, very well acted, great production design, well shot, etc and great elements like the retro-futurism but I really found the resolutions of episodes 2, 3 and 4 lacking imagination as so many other episodes had such great twists to the endings. Will watch episode 5 tonight and hope for some redemption... This has long been a favorite series - it's a bit like with the last season of Game of Thrones in that it suffers from the standard it earlier set for itself.

On retro-futurism, just saw Asteroid City in a theater. LOVED it. Not everyone's taste for sure but I really enjoyed it.
