What's a domain worth?

I owned my own name all through the 90s and early 2000s. It's a very unique name. I doubt if there are 3 people in the whole world with my name. I've googled it many times, and me and my grandfather are the only ones in all of history that I've ever seen with my name.
In 2005 I was out of the country and let it slip. Yeah, I was dumb. Sure, you snooze you lose. Someone else snatched up my it and has never done anything with it. Two years ago, now that I'm in business for myself, the guy sends me an email and says he wants $15K for my own name. I told him to go f himself. I told him strictly on principle he would never get one red cent out of me. If he had said he wanted a few hundred for it, I would have gritted my teeth and paid it. But that greedy slimeball priced himself right out of the market. I'm probably the only one in the world who would want it, and now he's paying $10 a year for nothing.

he didn't "squat" the .com name. it's the name he chose for HIS band!
he didn't make up the name sell it to a future buyer.

The band disbands.
What's the protocol? Immediately give it away? Give it away for a pittance? More than a pittance? How much more? How much time has to pass between the end of the band and the giving away/sale of the domain? Who decides?

Look, I'm not saying the OP is a bad guy, but let's call a spade a spade about what he's doing.

Same exact thing happened with my partner in the nerve. He had his own personal name that he let slip, someone snatched it up immediately, and then wanted big bucks for it. That, IMO, should be illegal.
That's also why if I'm interested in a domain I won't even type it into a browser (or godaddy) until I'm ready to pull the trigger. And I buy it immediately if available.
VERY well said! At what point does the band "squat" the domain. Never. it is theirs.
Well then agree to disagree. We all draw our own lines. As someone who's been on the other side of it, I personally would never do that to another musician. As I said before, I think the OP should get a return on the money he spent and a little bit more to go have a good time. But I personally wouldn't ask for more... Unless it was Kanye. I'd love to stick it to Kanye.

. The idea that I'm cybersquating, doing anything immoral, or illegal is preposterous to me. I have 0 doubt that I'm not, and well... Don't have it in me to argue.
I should add that I'm not dying to sell this because I sometimes toy with the idea of getting this band going again. And I love the name. And there's nobody on the east coast using it. It's mine, and I'm just considering letting it go.

I don't know. I guess you have to decide that for yourself. At what point do you feel like you're taking advantage of someone. I personally put that bar pretty low.
