What's a domain worth?

The thing is, if my band leader came to us and said, "Someone wants to sell us ______________.com for $10K," I'd say, "Why don't we just buy __________-band.com for $25?" My band would have to play 20-30 unpaid gigs for that $10K domain name.

I let our domain name slip, nobody cares about websites anymore. If the bands you want to sell to are real high end bands that play a lot of high dollar gigs, you might get some money out of it. I wouldn't pay someone anything for our domain name. Its available to buy right now if anyone wants to cyber squat it and try me.

When people are looking for a website that is not in there bookmarks already, they will just type it out in plain words, like 'nancy and the needles band'. Google will return results that are in the music business as opposed to some sewing club or random Pinterest pages about quilting.

Adding the keyword 'band' actually helps your band's domain name to be found easier when people search for it.

Type in 'genesis' and you'll get a bunch of bible links before you get to the band's website. Add the keyword 'band and it eliminates all of the bible websites.

what if they all put phil collins band in their metatags?

For a local band, the best position to be in is to have your band come up high on a random Google search for whatever your focus is.

You want to be on page 1 of a search for the generic search terms people might use, like for a cover band, "cover band [your city]." If you can do that, the band name/domain name doesn't matter.

I joined a cover band about four years ago, secured a domain, and built a website with meta tags that caused the band to hit on page one of just such a generic search after about three weeks. People don't have to know our band name or domain, but if they do we still come up. The upshot is that people looking for a "band" but don't know who they're looking for? Yeah, we're there...

Meta tags aren't worth as much as they used to be. Google got wise to people stuffing the meta tags with keywords. The algorithms they use now scan the whole page and calculate the value of its content using complex ratios. I haven't bothered using meta tags for a few years now.

I own a .com for a tribute band I once started that never got off the ground. It's a great name, so great that a few other bands around the world have also used it :). Those bands are pretty active (some doing really well) and I've been thinking of contacting them asking if they'd like to buy the domain.

Has anyone here ever done that? Any idea of what the process is, and what the going rate is for something like that? Part of me wants to hold onto it, in case I ever decide to get that tribute going again... but if the price was right, I think I'd be willing to let go.

Tell me what you know please. Or what you think. Or what you think you know :). Thanks.
Joe this ours it is not for sale just showing you that yours maybe be worth selling someday Yeah ours if Est. value $15,897 US. :) RTS
