What's a good acoustic bass?

On the double bass subject- I absolutely want one, and would figure out how to make it sound proper in my applications. I'm a firm believer in "buy the best to start with, and you only buy once", but I currently need practicality. An ABG is actually best for me in this case. Plus, I'm a collector, so I'll get to the upright in due time! Thank god I'm feeling pretty well set with my guitar gear!

On the DB subject: I actually bought a cheaper bass because I was planning to lug it out in the street and busk with it, and I wouldn't want to ruin an expensive bass. Also I didn't trust myself to look after a fully-carved bass properly in terms of humidity and so on, and I'm now glad I bought a laminated bass since we've just had the coldest December since the 1950s! If I'd bought a nice bass it would probably be covered in cracks right now.
