What's a "push notification"?

... and why would I want to enable one for TB?

Push notifications are pop-up messages sent to users devices by a web app which can be viewed from the device lock screen when the app isn't currently in use. They can be used in addition to or in place of email notifications if you use those. I find them annoying and invasive, especially if you are unable to specify the categories of items you are interested in viewing. It drives higher user engagement which is probably why its being promoted so heavily.

I feel like the question has generally been answered at this point. I suppose I understand why this wouldn't be of interest to TB's average user, but... I actually tried to rig up a system to be able to make this work on the old system, but it never worked. So, I'd be happy to know if it could work now.

I'm sure there's lots of dubious intent with regard to drawing user engagement, but... seriously, I just want to know when somebody responds to private messages. Especially if it might be time-sensitive-- responding to a classifieds offer, etc. I don't like to have to be constantly checking my computer in situations like that.

I just enabled them.
If I'm understanding correctly, a notification will be sent when I get a PM. Hopefully it's limited to that - at least that's the only option shown.
I can see where this would be helpful if you have listings in the classifieds.... or anyone else who is messaging you for that matter.
