What's Aguilar AG 500SC stuffed with?

You mean you guys can't hear any high frequency buzz in the tweeters from the switching power supplies anymore? I haven't tried any of the "micro" heads out yet but read of a quiet switching PS buzz in the extreme upper frequencies. Not true? I might have to audition one now.

Hadn't heard that one yet......

I've been using Class D amps for the last 4 years now. I can tell no difference between them and "big iron", except for less pain in my back..... ;)

YMMV, but to me it is about my tech having a pile of SMPS/Class D amps on the bench every time I pay him a visit. Still gigging with lead sleds.

You can never draw any conclusions about the reliability of a topology without knowing the number of units shipped/in use. My guess is that the reason there are so many more small amps in the repair shop is that there are so many small amps being used these days.;). As a percentage, probably zero difference among general designs regarding reliability.

The reliability of gear has gone WAY up over the last 30 years IMO and IME.

I will not argue with that and really did not mean to open the 'Class D reliability' can o' worms :). Meant my comment more as a jest. However, as long as the manufacturers are not publishing failure rates, all you can do is to draw conclusions based on the data you have, just saying ;).

And my tech has almost no Class D amps and a whole bunch of broken vintage amps, especially Ampegs. That doesn't really mean anything.

I figured vintage tube amps go without saying. Mind you, it was mostly tube amps and digital gear (keyboards, FX processors etc.) that ended up on the bench before the micro amp craze, rarely solid-state heads. My tech complained that he suddenly started getting a lot of micro amps so there is something that can be said about the benefits mature technology. I figure I'll jump on the bandwagon once he quits complaining, lol ;).
 
Are more class D amps being sold today than class A/B or class H?
If so, that could explain the ratio in the repair shop. People are more inclined to spend money getting a relatively new amp repaired than they would be to repair an amp they've had for 5 or 10 years.
