On the Aerodyne there is no pick guard or control plate so the control cavity is routed from the back. I don't think they are active basses, so its not a battery compartment.
Those knobs on the front have little metal "cans" on the back. they also have wires that lead to the pickups and output. All that stuff had to get in there somehow, right? Well, you guessed it. Being that the magic elves were off that day, they had to route a hole in the back and stuff all that junk in there. If you were to look at a "regular" Jazz bass, you would see a metal cover around those same knobs on the front. Same deal.
I know a guy that knows a guy.... Never mind.
I don't think the OP gets that joke Landau. The potentiometers (pots) are, as the above says, the business parts (cans) of the tone and volume controls that live up in there behind door number one.
