Coming: Mastotron

Going: Space on my pedal board and money.

Down the road a bit: Modding a Boss SD-1 for bass.

I think reading this section of the forums is becoming a bad habit. Too bad I love it.

The only one I've ever used is a NYC... how does the Russian sound in comparison?

The Russian is more 'bass friendly' as it has more clarity in the lows. It still has a mid cut, as it is a muff. It's less fizzy and fuzzy and more bassy and ballsy. It would cut through the mix in heavier bands than an NYC. There are mods you can do to it to raise the sustain, etc.

Let me enlighten you regardingthe original Sovtek Muffs. I have owned over half a dozen green ones and 4 of the 6 versions.

First, the black Sovtek reissues and BBM are nothing of the sonic character of the originals. There are mods to the black ones that can obtain a similar tone though, although it doesn't nail it.

No two sound alike due to variables and availability in components when they were built. Many are great pedals, but you get the occasional one that just plain sucks. The end result is that you just have to try it out before making a decision.

The ones I like maintain quite a bit of low end, but the fuzz is still very wild, almost over the top sounding, for a plain jane fuzz. However, I am still adding a Barge Concepts dual blender so I can chose to use a wet/dry mix or a pure fuzz mix, as to my ears no pure fuzz sound sits well in the mix with an entire band playing.

But in the end, when you find the one you like it is hard to settle for any other similar fuzz. I have yet to compare my "civil war" muff on an A/B basis with a Tonebender Thin Case though, as those are similar circuits from what I understand. But none of the clones have held up yet.

As far as NYC's go, I would steer clear of them. I have had a few of those and they are just too thin, there little low end to them it seems to my ears.
