Maybe we'll give up on P basses and go back to the upright, or to a guy who can hit the low notes with his voice
Nothing, in most contexts. I expect the bass guitar itself will loose relevance sooner than the p bass will loose relevance within the realm of bass guitar.

That's the definition of user friendly. One of the things that makes the P a winner.

Many of them are shopping and buying some old style Telecaster guitars, you know the design of the 50's that looks like it’s been cut out of a 2x10 lumber? Why is that ?
A Stratocaster can do much more and probably better but eh, those guys want the real vintage thing. They pretend it’s different and nothing can beat that.
For me, my vision of the p bass is about the same as those Telecaster freaks : I want one and it’s here to stay.

When I started in retail in the 70's, Precision's were the thing and you couldn't give away Jazz Basses.
Then the 80's come along and it's a lot of Far East and through neck axes. Aria SB's, Ibanez Musicians, Yamaha BB. Then the loud colors and 2nd generation American axes: Guild Pilots, the original Hammer CruiseBass, the then new G & L's (which had a very slow start), Streinbergers and Spectors.
Then for the last 20-odd years, endless variations of Jazz Basses in the wake of Sadowskys.
Wait long enough, it will roll around to something else. Always did, as always will.

I would say dominant even up until the late 2000s. Indie rock was huge with the hipster crowd, but not so much anymore. However, there’s still so many new bands doing it well. The only thing that’s really “popular” these days is the worst form of pop music and trap music. to get to the good stuff, you really need to be savvy with using Spotify because they’re still millions of great songs coming out every year. Tons of really great retro styled surf and indie rock that features really really great style baselines
