What's going to replace the Precision?

News Flash (AP): After 7 decades of success with their low end staple Precision bass, Fender announces a new line for '25...

... the Fender Pernickety ©.

WAY more precise than a Precision! So much more, we're doing away with the Precision, cause it's less precise than the Pernickety ©. The Pernickety's © debut will offer two exact colors... red and green, just in time for the holidays.

The Pernickety ©... going the extra thousandth of an inch, to make you happy.

The specific sound of a P-Bass has been imprinted on most of our brains, so I don't think it'll go anywhere until we are all dead (and that's assuming those countless classic P recordings eventually are also forgotten by later generations). But yeah, the synthesizer is ultimately probably the best answer to this question- the P-Bass will go out of fashion when stringed electric instruments go totally out of fashion!

I think we need a decent definition of the word fad. I'm pretty sure the steam train or the cathode ray TV set weren't fads but there aren't many around these days. Designs arrived and disappeared not necessarily because they were fads but because they filled a purpose for a time and then something better came along. I don't see pockets or Precision basses as fads. They are still performing their intended functions very well after so many years. A fad to me is a flight of fancy that is easily done without. I'm open to a proper definition though.

I still see young bassists here in Australia playing Precision basses. Fad? I don't think so. Popular functional instruments - yes.

The Precision is the ideal bass!!!

The only problem is that the tuners are a wee bit heavy.

Oh, and the fretboard radius needs to be a little flatter.

And a zero fret would be nice.

And a tilt-back headstock would help. A lot.

And the neck should be multi-laminate, for stability.

Can we get a few more frets while we’re at it?

And the Tetris pickup isn’t that great. It has this weird hollow tone to it.

Maybe another pickup would help. Or two more!

While we’re at it, a better wiring harness would bring out more from the pickups. A filter preamp would be ideal.

And the body is too thick for my liking. And the contours are in the wrong places.

And why would you want to cover up that nice wood grain with a big slab of tacky plastic??

Let’s improve on that bridge too.

In fact, let’s just move the tuners to the bridge. That’s better!

Yep, the Precision is my favorite bass ever!!

I felt like replying to a guy sarcastically saying a P bass was a 70-odd year fad and saying that pockets were equally a fad would be pretty obvious sarcasm at its face.

The P bass, even if it WERE on its way out, and it probably isn't with how much I see them, would still have had what plenty would call a good run. Now let's evolve past wearing pants. I figure that'll take a week or two, tops ;)

Most pop isn’t real bass, and hasn’t been for a long time.
