What's in your rack?

Here's mine - short and sweet:

G-K 700rb-II amp
X2 XDR-95 wireless receiver
Korg DTR-2000 tuner

I'll soon be replacing the G-K with a Genz-Benz GBE 600... I have a surge strip velcro'd in the back, with a 15' 14/3 extension cord on it - it takes up less space, weighs less, and costs FAR less than any Furman - about $13 - and does the same thing... I've also added a sling in the back for storing my wireless transmitter, and a spare 9v battery holder on the back of my amp...

^ I kinda just like the fact that it is a nice big, rackmountable, surge-protecting powerstrip. But yea, unless you're willing to shell out major bucks, the basic one's won't make it have stable power. I've never had a problem with mine.

As far as the sonic maximizer, it's an aquired taste. Another time you should play it before you buy. I love mine though, man it thickens the sound.

New to Talkbass, but been a bass player for 16 years!

My rack consists of the following:
8 Space Gator Rack

1)Monster Power 2500
2)Korg DTR2000 Tuner
3)X2 Wireless
4)Sansamp RBI
5)dbx 266xl
6)empty
7-8)SWR 350x (used as a power amp now thanks to the sansamp)

all runs through an Ampeg 610HL

love my tone and rack!

1-Road ready 4 U rack with a custom exhust grill on top to vent my Bad ass GK1001RBll
1-Furman Power conditioner
1-Sonic Maximizer (Get one of these Guys, you wont be sorry,Trust me)
Bass pounder, Aint that the truth Brother.
Rock on everyone

Just curious, to the power conditioner haters.. Can you recommend a single space rackmount power conditioner that isn't just a power strip with a bunch of marketing hoo-haa inside?

Okay, my rack:
JoeMeek VC6. It kills.
RNC 1773. It also kills.

Usually just one or the other. I think if I ran them both there might be actual killing. I know, odd choices. Works for me.

I whent the GB way and found myself back with the GK 1001RBll after one show.

Look for the words "power regulator" as those are the devices that can actually deliver consistent power levels. The word "conditioner" is meaningless due to the vast range of interpretations; in the old days a "conditioner" was a "regulator", but for many years now a "conditioner" is any power strip with a single self-sacrificing component to block some surges.

Hey bongomania, whould you say that the power conditioner is worthless. and if so i am going to shuv it up the guys A$$ that told me i should get it. It did save my head once. do you have an alternative to the power conditioner?

Just out of curiousity, what Genz-Benz amp did you have, and what didn't you like about it??? FWIW, I'm also keeping the 700rb-II, so I can easily drop it back into my gigging rack if I feel it does a better job than the GBE 600 - and I'm not in any way dissatisfied with the 700rb-II, btw... I've really liked the sound of any Genz amp I've played through, and think the GBE 600 will be a bit more versatile than the 700rb-II...

About the conditioner saving the guy's head, remember a surge protector does work sometimes! The "power conditioner hater guys" are only saying a power conditioner doesn't do as much as the advertising would lead you to believe, and that you typically get about as much benefit by using a simple power strip. But a simple power strip usually also contains a surge protector! Surge protection is a valid function. In most cases it's a small component called a MOV which is designed to self-destruct (like a fuse) when it gets hit by a surge, which keeps the surge from hitting your gear. Which can in fact save an amp head.

mines pretty simple,

Juice Goose (power surge protecter)
Sans amp RBI (preamp)
Ampeg SVT3 Pro (poweramp)

also have a few fx gion straight into the San amp

Boss OBD-3 (Overdrive)
Boss GEB-7 (7 band EQ)
Boss LMB-3 (Limiter/ Enhancer)

all played through my Schecter Stiletto Studio-5 lefty.

benn thinking about selling the rbi and just getting a VT pedal and running straight throught the fx into the imput of the SVT 3. any thoughts/ opinions?

I find myself going the opposite way. A few weeks ago I picked up a new GK 1001RB-II and while I like the head and it does sound great through my Avatar B410 NEO, I find that my Genz GBE1200 just gives me more of the sound I like.

There's something about using the channels "combined" on the GBE1200 that just does it for me.

I might toss the new GK up here as trade bait and see if I can make a deal for another Fender bass or another GB head.

To each his own

Keep Low :bassist:

The only thing that's always in my gigging rack is a power strip of some sort.

In addition to the requisite preamp & power amp (or, for a while, a combo head) I've had a compressor (either dbx 165a or AudioArts 1200) and an Alesis QuadraVerb+ multieffects unit in there. But I almost never take those out of the studio anymore, none of my performance situations call for compression or time-based FX these days.

The Alembic SF-2 is almost always in there, either as the main preamp, or as an EQ in the loop of whatever the basic amp is.

To be truthful, I almost never bring my rackmounted bass rig out to a gig anymore, so my "rack" is mostly integrated into the other outboard gear racks for my recording studio.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "haters". The problem some of us have is with the MARKETING, not the product. Some companies would have you believe that they are the end all be all of protection and stability. I have one in my rack, but I'm fully aware that it is just a power strip. And NO there aren't (to my knowledge) any SINGLE SPACE power conditioners that really do anything. There are heavy, multi-space units that help regulate voltage and what not, but they are also expensive. Going with the single-space cheapy model is NOT a BAD thing, it just doesn't really do ANYTHING other than provide power (and maybe a LITTLE surge protection, depending on the model). I still really like mine for the whole one switch/one chord advantage.
