It's time to make some room in the closet. These don't come up for sale very often so I thought I'd ask for help. It's a 1980 Veillette-Citron single pickup neck-through bass. It's spent most of its 29 years under a bed. The original owner bought it to learn to play but soon gave up. I bought it from him several years ago. Passive electronics, volume, tone, & a pull switch that splits both coils in the pickup for a different tone but is still a humbucker in this mode. There are a few scrapes on the head, some pick scratches between the neck & pickup, and some finish checking on the face of the head and near the tailpiece. (It looks like scratches in the photo running from the tailpiece to the output jack, but it's checking.) Set-up is perfect. Can anyone help me on a selling price? Thanks.

There's a similar (active, two pickup) model on consignment here:

Nice bass, BTW! The former owner bought this to learn on?!? Man, talk about starting out on the right foot (or bass, in this case)! :)

First, your thread is going to be pulled soon because only supporting members (who contribute $$$ to TB) are allowed to ask what their item is worth. It's a policy that was enacted this year.

Second, I've been V-C basses in good to excellent shape change hands for about $2K on the rare occasions they do change hands. Yours is unusual in that is has one pickup and a sunburst finish, neither of which I've seen before, so a collector might be willing to pay more.

wow, really? That's a silly rule..............isn't talkbass about exchanging information? It's not someone wanting to sell, just someone wanting to know something from the community. Interesting......

Talkbass gets a lot of traffic: my guess is that the site had become an appraisal forum more than anything else.

Have you looked at eBay ? I'm pulling at straws here, since the bass is rare, but maybe you can at least get an idea.

PS: I have a friend who had an old guitar and he didn't kew what it was worth, so he put it on eBay with a reserve for a price he tought would be too expensive and started the bid @ .01 $ Not the smartest of ideas, since you'll have fees if it doesn't sell, but it can work to give you a rough estimate.

The rule is there because its a way that people who are looking to sell, but aren't going to pay the 20$ to become full members use it to solicit offers by PM. Otherwise it will just become a place where people post stuff for sale, which isn't the intent.

In other news, I don't know what it's worth, but I've played a few VC basses (much more recent ones) and met the builders...they're very cool instruments and very nice guys.

i had a one pickup 8 string with a lighter sunburst way back when-that was a wonderful bass, somewhat like a rick in sound (maple/neck throo). these are rare enough that it would be hard to say what pricing would be nowadays-they are pretty unknown in general, but very nicely made basses. no issues, neck cracks, etc?

Thanks for all the replies. Buskman - Yup, the guy lived near Woodstock & bought it directly from them because he wanted to learn to play bass. ashtray9 - That's more just a very long thumb rest, not really a ramp. woodyng - The neck is perfect, no structural or electronic issues at all. I'm not looking to trade, I really need to unload a bass or two.

[I have a 1980 4 string flame maple with the koa top and gold hardware ser# 169 I am the original owner and have had many large offers for it. This bass was bought about the same time as Joey DeMaio bought his 8 string from the same store and display case in Auburn, NY.

I owned the first 8-string that Joe and Harvey ever built. An incredible looking instrument. Fancy maple. It cost $1,500 back in 1978. Joe and Harvey had taken it to the NAMM show I believe in 77. To protect the custom flight case, they put masking tape along the outer edges of the case to prevent scratches.
A year later, when I purchased it from Manny’s in NYC, the tape was still on the case and I couldn’t get it off. So I drove to the Veillette Citron shop, and they both spent two hours helping me remove it. By then, it had badly gummed up and dried onto the case edges.
Over the years, I’ve owned 19 Veillette guitars and basses, including the only double-neck they ever made (6/12). Several I ordered directly from Joe and Harvey. I currently own 10 early VC's.
I’m still actively looking to buy any early production, early body-style instruments with brass knobs. Any guitars, basses, 12 strings, or 8 string basses. I even buy empty original cases. If you’ve seen any or have one for sale, I’m happy to pay strong prices.

Vincent Gallo is on Talkbass? Either that or this is a very dedicated troll.

Either way, I appreciate your work.
