Just moved into my new pad
This should provide ample room for a sawdust production facility. Can't wait to get back at it!!I bought myself a rather cheap-ish six string - a Spear S2. I thought I'd give it a try. It looked cool with its single cut design on the website. When I received it, I didn't really like the actual shape though (looked better on the photos)... but it played pretty well!
I bought it with the intention to change the pickup and to convert it to passive. I now had to decide - should I send it back and keep hunting for a 6 string single cut bass that I actually liked the look of? Or should I...
I then started to draw some templates after looking at some nice basses on the web.
...transferred them to the bass and fired up the bandsaw.
the body shape is inspired by the Stradi Bass.
a friend called me schizophrenic for doing such a thing - buying a brand new instrument just to cut it to pieces and transforming it into something very different. But I'm okay with that ;-)
So I kept on going. The lacquer had to be removed...
...first with some hot air and a spatula
...then I started sanding like a madman.
the neck got oiled and will be finished with wax.
body and headstock were stained in a yellow, to green, to blue burst.
I finished the body and headstock with hardwood floor finish.
Put some hardware and strings on it for testing. This is the current state so far.
I filled the old pickup routes, the 9V compartment and some of the pot holes with some scrap pieces of wood. A Delano Xtender is on the way, it will go right between the old pickup positions (~Stingray sweetspot). It'll have a master volume, a rotary switch for single front/humbucker series/humbucker parallel/single back and a 6-position rotary switch with different caps (like a tonestyler).
I'm happy with the results so far and looking forward to installing the new electronics!

This just came off the 'workbench' (and it has a thread: Danelectro Coral Deluxe Bass project - restoration of a 1968 Coral Deluxe Bass & OHSC.
With the addition of a TV, Radial Arm Saw, and dorm fridge, that's all any REAL man needs to sustain his existence. Hell, you already GOT the John Deere, everything else is Gravy, my friend.Absolutely nothing...

This. My first stab at building a bass and my first neck-through.
P.s. I still don’t have a workbench so I hope I can post here
Also my first attempt at making a body blank by jointing 2 pieces:
I’m happy with it especially for a first effort. It’s spalted sycamore. I got hold of a fair sized slab, but by the time I’d removed all the cracked/barky/dodgy bits I only just managed to save enough for a guitar, so I didn’t have a choice in the grain/spalting etc.
This will be the back face, I have an interesting top planned. I might even bite the bullet and do a build thread.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post non-bass related stuff, but I'll risk a write-up.
Doing my first refret. I've done fretting, but never refretting. This is a buddy's dad's 60-something Hagstrom III, which has been played hard and put down wet.
Yanked the frets (carefully) and leveled the board as best I could.
Sticking with tiny frets still, but stainless this time, so as to avoid the wear as best we can. I've got those on order, so we wait. It also needs the bridge replaced with something that isn't impossible to find (like a 60s Hagstrom bridge) and a new on-off switch for the neck pickup, both of which are on that order.
Now if you don't like the fact that it's a short scale piccolo bass VI, no worries. But I think you WILL like the interior of the case...

Yeah, nice axe, nicer case. Looks like you’re doing fine so far. My only contribution would be something you probably already know, use a small triangle file and chamfer the top of the fret slots.

When I first haunted music stores in the late 60's, Hagstrom's were commonly found on the wall. Looking at this one, it looks like Reverend used it as a template for Mike Watts recent ss Watt-plower bass, at least the body shape. Closer to a Haggy than an EB.
