What's the Best Bass for Hyperpop?

The OP's video link sounds better than a bunch of that current day "rap" music. Definitely not my thing, but it seems ANY kind of bass would work here. Probably should avoid flatwound strings and just pick up your bass and start playing. That should sound the "best".

I think Tony and I think Sledgehammer when he played with Peter Gabriel. Or Steinberger as seen in the Geddy Lee pic. Honestly I just love the tone of a Warwick thumb on litterally anything so that's why it's a go to for me.

That fact that this kind of playing has become acceptable in the song writers eyes for some of the pop groups I play in is part of what got me away from the P Bass and back to a five string active bass. I used to have a corvette standard, not it’s a mid 90’s stingray 5. Love it!

I really think the twangy muahhness a fretless provides works awesome in pop or electric type music. I love jamming stuff like genesis, phill Collins, Peter Gabriel, Gorillaz, etc on fretless. Fun and the twang works once you get the hang of where to place it.

I'm getting to be in that same boat. I love my p-bass with j neck basses, but I might have to add a 5 back into my collection. I even have one of the P's tuned to B standard, but there are getting to be those times I really miss having that extended range.

Seriously, though, you don't want a P bass, or a Jazz, a Stingray, a Ric, a Hofner, etc...those would all be poor choices. Not quite as inappropriate as a Kala U, perhaps, but..

You'll want something as unusual the music you'll be playing.

Actually, I'm thinking a U bass would work pretty well with this. Super deep low notes and is pretty eye catching in it's own way.

It would be pretty fun to see somebody hitting some of those low sub notes on a tiny uke.

Interesting how we have a new subgenre. So that video sounded like a precision bass was used. Maybe a Yamaha attitude or something but definitely was split coils or something along those lines. It sounds to me like electronica using hipster basses. If I were going to be doing something like this style I'd want to be really out front in the music with my bass so I'd get a ballsy sounding Warwick thumb bass or something active and really go to town. Or something like a fretless Ibanez like Sean Malone played and really get interesting. Fretless stingray like Tony Levin would be cool. This sounds like a genre that you can do whatever you want with. Get a modern sounding bass and rip it. I'm not going to sit here and dog this stuff like I'm sure we're going to have but I'm just going to say that I'd get something super aggressive sounding and play the hell out of it.

I agree. I mean, you can eq a P or J to sound like that video for sure, but a Warwick or Stingray will get closer to that sound just with a DI. Seems like a genre you want ample bite.

Exactly. Lots of crunch and mids and get funky with it. It's so out there that it's almost impossible to overplay or be too forward in how you approach it.

Yeah, I ditched the P w flats when I did a few gigs in a row where every bassist on the bill had a fender with flats. It’s cause they sound great of course so I went the other way lol and got an active bass and stopped being shy with the treble!

I jam to Charli XCX a lot and my J-style bass does the trick. Of course I usually need to stack up the effects since they're synth lines, so it's fuzz (i think distortion would work fine and even better for some songs) + chorus and pretty often some delay.

I'd personally also go active or use an outboard preamp to really make the tone aggressive.
