What's the Best Bass for Hyperpop?

I grew up in the 80's so I appreciate modern bands that have that decade's influence. The song in the OP is cool.

I always liked weird music like that... Mr. Bungle, Devo, etc.

Tbh, the only reason I'm making this thread is that the genre of Hyperpop has never been mentioned on this site (look it up, 0 results). Seeing as it is one of the newest genre's of music with growing popularity, it seems like a good idea to get TB to start thinking about how the bass guitar is and can be incorporated, starting with what gear to use.

For those of you who don't know, which is apparently everybody based on the search results;

"Hyperpop is a loosely-defined music movement and microgenre, characterized by a maximalist or exaggerated take on pop music"

Some of the bigger artists in the scene would be 100 Gecs, Bladee, SOPHIE (r.i.p), Charli XCX, and Slayyyter for reference.

Even though the genre is heavily steeped in electronic music, there's still a role for the bass. Recently 100 Gecs released the song Doritos and Fritos which contains a very prominent bass line.



So in classic Talkbass fashion, I'd like to begin by asking the question that will definitely be well received with an objective answer we all agree on; what's the best bass for Hyperpop?

With this tune as an intro for “what bass”, I’d say anything with a P-bass pickup, but an ultra-modern sounding pickup like an Active EMG and using flats…

Have you heard Igorrr? Not exactly hyperpop but it it might scratch that itch:

Some might throw that tune into the folk metal pool. It made me think of Japanese folk metal band Jade Forest Company.

You could probably say it's a proto something whatever song. I wouldn't think it would be out of place in a playlist. Even I don't bother getting into classifications that deep, tbh. That type of over the top vibe is a sound I really like, and you can definitely see it in there.

Also, people are lying if they don't think Barbie Girl is a banger.

Don't really want to go off the rails too much and make this a playlist thread, but seeing as this is new to a lot of people, you might want to check out some of the bigger hits of the style that are a little older. Vroom Vroom is a classic by Charli XCX that helped set the tone. Produced by SOPHIE.

And this is another 100 gecs track with a great bass line. Kind of a pop punk style line I'd say.
