You can find them on sale or used all the time for a couple hundred, a SWR Workingman 12" combo. Has good sound, small, and enough power to use for small Jazz or coffee house type gig.

WHAT'S THE BEST PRACTICING COMBO ?

+1 on the Nemesis NC210P as a bedroom/small gig combo.
-1 on the GK MB150E.
I've owned both and the tone of the GK, to me, has always been less than inspiring, which is the opposite of what you'd want in a practice amp. The Nemesis is bulky, but is very light for a 210 combo and stays loud and clear even when pushed to the limits of its volume. It will hold up in practices with a drummer, and is a better value at around $750 than the little GK, IMO. It also works well as a stool if you need to sit down during practice.
If all you want is something no frills to practice with, you definitely don't need to spend $800. For a bargain basement option, I'd recommend the Ibanez SW35. If you can get over the Ibanez stigma, it's a very clean-sounding low volume amp.

For practice with my band, I just bought a new combo to replace my old, worn out Mini-Brute IV.
I got a deal on a new Fender Rumble 100 - for $250.
It's got 100 Watts, a 15" driver with a high-freq horn. THe contols are simple, with no useless gadgetry like overdrive or octave dividers, just a simple layout, and really great tone. The tone knobs are: Bass, Lo-mid, Hi-mid, Treble. It has an active/passive switch, headphone jack, CD input jacks, and a front panel XLR out with line level control and ground lift in case you want to use it for more than practice.
It powers through in the rehearsal space, rings clear like a bell, and it's got removable casters included. I love the thing.
The only gimmick is a set of red LED's in the bottom port that light up with the signal strength, but they included a switch to turn it off. It looks cool, so I leave it on.
