Whats the diff bet. pedals and single effects?

I'm a bass effect noob and I don't use effects when playing. :(
Can someone teach me the difference between pedals (the one with multiple pedals with all the confusing knobs) and the single ones(the one with a single switch and a few knobs)?

I'm really confused and I wanna get into using effects, please teach me or share your ideas. :D

The difference is a single effect ( let's say Chorus ) does just one thing but allows you to tweak that ONE thing with the knobs. A multi effect usually has Chorus/Octaver/Envelope as well as all kinds of other things. IMO typically the single units give a bit better quality on that ONE thing but do you want seven single pedals or just a single unit with multiple options.

It's like a Swiss Army Knife versus a sword, axe, baseball bat, toothpick, saw, pincet, magnifying glass, screwdriver, blowtorch, sciccors, Pacman, calculator, fork, flashlight, beer-bottle-hat, drill, plyer, measuring tape, ..., ..., ...

If you're new and clueless, get a decent multi-effects pedal, like the Zoom, or whatever, and use it to learn what all the different effects are, and how they sound. Later, you can decide which single effects you want to use, and buy those one at a time.
