What's the etiquette around here? Or, a sideways introduction...

Talkbass is really interesting from what I've experienced so far.

1.) Really, if you try to alienate yourself from the general census, you will hear sh*t about it.

2.) 98% of the people here are dudes with cats(myself included)

3.) There are a lot of smart people on here with good advice. Listen to them.

4.) Lots of jokesters on here

5.) Dont get personal or you will get hit with a warning from a mod. Sometimes fourm fights erupt, but as long as you respect the other side while stating your opinion you should be fine.

6.) DONT EVER ASK ABOUT COMBINING SPEAKER SIZES OR IF USING PICKS IS BETTER OR WORSE.

7.) Have fun. I really stay because of the great advice I get.(like therapy) Also, some of the posts are hilarious. I enjoy reading them and it makes work go by quicker. So just enjoy that we have acess to this great site and we don't live in communist China or something.

8.) Learn how to post pictures, it helps a lot. Also, DoNt TyPe Leik DiS YoOo! It pisses people off here.

You will enjoy it. I guarantee it. :hyper:

Just be yourself, avoid being rude or disrespectful regardless of how much you may feel the need to do so.
You will hear about it if you do.

Keep in mind absolutely ANYTHING you ask will be answered with good information from most but is almost certainly going to attract smart @$$ remarks and completely irrelevant rude comments. It's unavoidable. People will be people. Just be prepared for both and ignore the latter.

While your doing that, prepare yourself and your skins thickness for;

A smoothly blended melting pot of some of the most obnoxiously self assertive, pretentious, egotistical, arrogant, ostentatiously pedantic individuals you may ever encounter.

As well as and often times more so, some genuinely good people, that Seem to always make themselves available, to assist others in any way possible. Some truly knowledgable people that are so incredibly perspicacious when offering advice and tips for almost any question, or problem related to the wonderful world of the bass guitar.

In short some absolutely awesome people to get to know and have available at your disposal for almost anything you can think of. Some of this knowledge is hands down priceless and w/o it I'd have been lost, having just gotten into bass.
Once you filter through the grammar Nazis, and the guys desperately trying to feel superior to their fellow members, through the use of pointless big words, and the ones that refuse to accept that they aren't infallible. There's some great information to be obtained here.


Just be polite, have patience don't engage in pointless arguments or excuse yourself from them before they get out of hand.
Something myself and many others need practice with.

Erm, I'm a journalist, so I've got a bad attitude about bad grammar. But I generally just fume at the monitor, indignantly muttering "You can't modify a superlative!"

+1 to this, and thanks for teaching me the word perspicacious. Our journalist friend probably already knows what it means but if you are like me here is the definition. It means "Having or showing penetrating mental discernment; clear-sighted."
