What's the longest you've gone without your bass?

My (ugh!) day job sent me to Bismarck, ND for a month. Literally one month. Since I don't have a flight case for my basses, I didn't bring any. Good thing too, because the airlines left my luggage in Austin.

So here I sit, in a swank hotel, without the distractions of day to day family life, plenty of free time to work on my chops, write new lines, or learn new materials. But no axe.

I'm considering having my wife ship my newest (and least expensive) axe up here via Fedex. But I may also just ride it out.

What is the longest you've had to go without access to your bass? And why oh why?

About a year luckily I had a guitar at least. The reason was I sold my beloved bass when I was active in my drug addiction.

Without any access to any music instrument what so ever was a month (rehab) with limited access (only able to play someone else's instrument) three months (halfway house). That may be one reason why I have been clean for four years now. I like to play my instruments and keep them too.

Best of luck man hope your wife can ship you one of your basses. I ended up tapping and just fingering out stuff with out a bass, oddly enough it kept playing on decent shape. Literally playing imaginary bass.

No bass from 1995 to 2005... Joined the Army and was assigned overseas(Japan and Germany) then deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan more times than I care to remember. Came home after deployment to Afghanistan in 2005 and decided playing bass was a good way to enjoy life again. Since 2005 the longest separation has maybe been a day or two.

Heh heh for 25 years. But when I started playing again I had the time and resources to make up for lost time. Love it more than ever and am a much better player with the wide open resources we have now. ( I learned playing with records, OJT and going to listen to other bands. ) ;)

The longest time without a bass for me was around 10 months, when I went to live and study abroad for my training period.
I got a loan on an acoustic guitar as soon as I got acquainted with people though.
And not much later I was granted to play electric guitars and drums at home jams too.
But not a bass to be seen in the whole area.

Within a month after coming home, I bought a new bass and got back to it.

Photobassist, thank you for your service to our country, it does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

My nephew had my gear for about twelve years or so. I moved to a new city, got married, focused on the job, house, kids, etc and never got in with musicians here. Did not play for about twenty years. The kids moved out and I got my bass back, thinking I'd just doodle in front of the TV. Got a text from a friend of mine whom I'd never played with before inviting me to jam. Fast forward two years and we now practice once a week and gig out at least twice a month. I am a better player now and a much happier person overall.

Thank you for your service, in 2000 I was young boy just picking up the bass. Thanks for your sacrifice and play on man you deserve it.

When it was there but I didn't play it?

Sometimes months--I was focussing on guitar.

But away from it, so I couldn't play it if I wanted to?
About 6 weeks--I was in high school and our family took a longer trip than I ever had before or since.

About two years. My first real band had broken up and I was thrust into a 3rd shift job and actual adult hood. It was good for me as I got over some of my own crap but I was lost. I couldn't find anyone to jam with that was of the same mind. Once I got back into it I vowed I'd never lose it again.
