What's This Bass Technique Called?

Hi All!

Was wondering what the bass technique is called in this video, when the main chord sequence starts on the G to the D, he's doing it on every third pluck.



Is he just plucking the string and muting it with this left hand and it's as simple as that or does it have a name?

At the moment I'm using a midi controller to play bass lines with bass vst patches in a daw, as it's my only option (to my acoustic guitar tracks) and I think what he's doing in that track would be too difficult to emulate synthesis-wise but if anyone had any tips on that matter, I'd appreciate it.

I use these often, but I only remember using them because they just felt natural. I am sure I heard them in music, but it was just like using a word I had heard someone else use.

A drummer I know that was learning bass was asking how to do them. And it was funny since I never really thought about it.

I play at least 6 distinct types of these notes, often several different types in the same 1-2 bar phrase. I’ll let the pedants argue over what each of them are called, most people don’t care.

I’ve also heard them called ‘choked’ and ‘half-choked’ notes, or even percussive notes. Discuss.
