this killed meWhen I want to rock out, see a show or dance my butt off,
the first thing I seek is a leukemia benefit.

IEMs
The “cell phones” of bands.
I'm going OEM shortly. Earbuds pop out on me so headphones it will be. Not ready to go ampless yet tho. What's wrong with iems? Quieter stages produce better foh mixes. Quieter rehearsals/performances save hearing. I don't see any downside to either.

This is intriguing. What is the nature of the back tracks?
Agreed. Even dudes with hot dates sitting right across from them stare into the zombie machine ™...
You have been heard. There is a very famous episode in the the series “Star Trek Next Generation” called the Game.
Considered one of the top ten episodes by the way.
Wesley tries to stop an alien game on the Enterprise from taking over the crews minds.
Cell phones in our society now are very much this game. They are changing generations into self absorbed beings unaware of normal society interaction.
People are unaware of the data/tracking these devices are doing. Let alone how they are ruining there own minds.
Are minds are the least active when watching T.V. The most vulnerable when we are on our cells.
They destroy creativity, social awareness and our enjoyment. We where a much better society before digital babysitters.
We won major battles against evil ideology, built ships and explored the world. Made many advancements in medicine and created some of the best music with wood, brass, our voices and the desire to create something new.
All before A.I.
You want people to notice you are there as a band and dance with the pretty girls, ban digital soothers.
I have come to believe that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are Aliens.
Thanks for reading my short rant.
Clayton.
This actually happens far more than I'd expect. How many times we walk away thinking we were hated or sucked only to be approached after by patrons or owners with high praise. It's an enigma and I have stopped concerning myself with that (for the most part). Like you I have been doing this in some manner for over 40 years and I have watched a long slow change in a few areas. More of what I see is the laziness and lack of talent in so many bands of all ages. When I cam up in the late 70's early 80's the bar was high. You were competing against highly talented groups with large followings and big shows, at the bar level. So you had to work hard to carve a niche. As youngsters we would show to their gigs and work for free, unloading trucks, running cables whatever they needed simply to learn their business. There's none of that and the area is so watered down with mediocrity that it seems not to matter. Now get of my lawn.Update. We got a communique from the matriarch of the Leukemia survivor (her mother) that kinda apologized..."wow last night was so great! We were upstairs at the second level talking about how good you guys were! It was so hard to move around or interact. We can't wait to see you at your other engagements!"
Lame. So she couldn't take a trip downstairs and give us a fake society kiss kiss between songs? Also NO FOOD! As a former fat guy this is simply unconscionable. I'm gonna stuff this gig in the hurt locker with all my childhood alcoholic home trauma and concentrate on the hundy I'll make Saturday.
I'll probably feel better by tomorrow after all I'm a relatively healthy person and forgiveness is usually my code...
Something happened to society between 1993 and 2023.
Honestly we could make a better visual presentation. I've talked to the boys about clothing, but you can lead a deadhead to Harvard but you can't make him think...
...you say you could make a better impression ("visual presentation") --- maybe start there! good luck!![]()
It's just not the same music anymore/the music you are playing. That is in one sense a type of rebellion that is indeed happening amongst younger people. They simply do not want to go out to see cover bands of guys playing the same songs they've been playing for 40ish years.
I don't see this issue. Not only my band but lots of the better bands on my market get people up and dancing pretty regularly.
Are you playing the right kinds of places for what you are looking for from the crowd?
Are you actively engaging the audience during songs or just playing?
What's your show production look like?
Does the band dress like they want to be rock stars or dads having a weekend jam while drinking a couple beers?
A lot of these things aren't things folks around here like to acknowledge are important but they really are if you want to not be a "wallpaper " band. Being good musicians is only one part of the equation.
as an old guy i don't agree at all. people still want to hear that music. a LOT actually. But we have abandoned anything 70's or 90's. 80's and new music are the way to go. I don't think i actually even understand why I Cant Go for That and other assorted 80's hits kills so hard at cover gigs. but they do. lets dance? you might as well think we are bowie when we start. man eater, psycho killer, best friends girl just absolutely slays every time we play that stuff.
