This passed 2 weeks has been an expensive process of trial and error that has ended horribly... I don't know what the problem is, maybe you can help me find out!
A couple weeks ago i changed the strings on my bass for the first time. i've been playing for 16 months, so this was way over-due. Granted i never really needed to change my strings because i bought 3 brand new basses since ive started playing.
Anyways while changing the strings on my most prized possesion (an EBMM bongo 4 H LE2007) i was going for a much higher gauge. for some reason, an amateur mistake i guess, i stupidly put in a 130 E-string, which is normaly a B string for a 5 string bass. It hardly fit into the nut, in fact it really didnt fit at all, but i winded it anyways just to see what would happen. I didnt find the sound too horrific, and it gave my fingers a good workout so i left it there. Now my A D and G strings were also larger than they should have been but not to the point where they wouldnt fit in the nut.
Eventualy i started to notice an extremely unwelcome fuzz-y sound. It was most noticable on my E string but also present on my A string. I put back in my regular gauge (45-100) and the buzz was still there. Next i started to play with my EQ on my bass as well as my amp. What i noticed was kind of scary. When i raised my treble the fuzzyness would smooth out, but upon raising my bass it came back! my mid and volume controls did not seem to have an effect.
Hoping it was my crappy old amp and not my 1800$ bass, i shopped around looking for a new amp, brought my bass, tried some things and determined the porblem is definitly my bass.
Probably also worth mentioning is the fact that when i removed my very large gauge strings from my bass, i noticed 2 very minor scratches right after the nut, where the headstock curves, right where the E and A strings rest respectively. The one near the E string was deeper, the fuzz when i play on the E string is more apparent. Can this be my problem? If so would it be an expensive problem to fix?
My only other guesses are that i screwed too much with the neck tension while changing strings, or maybe i somehow managed to destroy my basses electronics.
Any help, tips, suggestions or insight on what to do next would be a great help. thanks in advance
