What's wrong with this picture (live drum mic'ing)?

+1, especially if you're using a board capable of killing a channel while keeping that channel's auxes hot, so you can shut off the too-loud snare itself while still adding some reverb to it.

Exactly.

Also, what makes this situation odd is that the stage itself was pretty large, with the drummer in a sort of alcove off center stage left, with the stage right guitarist/vocalist being quite a distance away. The room acoustics were also pretty "washy", so that guitarist was having trouble hearing a distinct hi-hat/snare at full crank, and wanted just a hint of each in his wedge mix so he could nail his timing. No snare, no hi-hat mic. The FOH mixer could have shut them off in the mains for all we would have known.

Our drummer is a very good singer. We all sing. Three guys, split the duties.
