Curious to see what brand is most commonly used by TalkBass. If you could leave a comment on why you prefer that brand, that would be very helpful.
i voted "other" --- the brand isn't as important to me as the qualities the string brings to the game. i have a few go-to brands that i like, but it's just a habit...familiarity! give me some light-gauge, highly compliant, round wounds and i'll probably find something good about them. i like 'em all! 'cept flats.
I like Rotosound swing bass but my favorites are Ken Smith Rockmasters. I figured those wouldn't be on the list.
Dunlop Super Bright Nickels and Flats in 40-100 (40-120 on my 5's). I love the low tension, the sound, and the feel.
I have two sets. The fender set that came on the bass and a set of Ernie Balls. I alternate them after soaking them in 99.9% alcohol overnight. They sound new for a while then I switch them again. I guess I’ll keep doing this until they wear out.
OP should've allowed multiple votes. Most members here own more than one bass and despite some chose a certain brand for majority or all of their basses, lots of others use various brands of strings with no preference towards one brand, other than what goes best with each bass. Or, they are on a quest to find the best strings match for his/her basses. Currently, I have a tie between Dunlop and D'Addario. Each are on 4 basses. But, I've put on also La Bella, GHS and Elixir on the others.
D'Addario. ProSteels 99% of the time, even on my fretless. But I enjoy the consistency and longevity, and tight response an higher tension of D'Addario strings across the board. If I can't find ProSteels, DR steels are my next choice. I do prefer hex core for tension's sake. But the Fat Beams are a great change of pace.
GHS black tapewounds. More responsive than any flatwounds I've ever tried, including Thomastik-Infeld and Ernie Ball Cobalts.
He also should've spelled elixir right. That probably swayed some of us snobby bass playing types to choose other simply because it was spelled wrong.
I actually like a lot of different strings, would have been nice if you allowed multiple votes. My favorites are La Bella DTB, Rotosound Swing 66's and DR Sunbeams. I happen to be on a Roto kick right now so selected those.
Well, he also spelled La Bella wrong too. But I'm not enough of a snob to correct him. Besides, I've been on a Rotosound kick lately.
After receiving a bass with SIT Nickel Power Wounds on it, I've now switched almost all of my basses to them. They have a growl and clarity I haven't found on anything else and they last forever. My Dingwall gets Paysons and my 83 P-Bass gets Rotosound Flats, but my MUB, Yamaha, Fernandes, and 2001 P-Bass all get SIT Power Wounds.
For about 10 years straight I was a DR guy, but recently I've been using D'addario's. Really like them.
