Actually, it is to save your tone. When you aren't using the tuner, it bypasses it completely so that your signal is unaffected. The Turbo Tuner does the same thing.

Which is the one of the main reasons I picked the Pitchblack in the first place...had my head up my arse when I typed that....

Frankly, I've only owned the Boss TU-2 before (worst thing ever for bass)

Nonsense. My band plays in all kinds of tunings and I have zero problems with the TU2.

Whatever you do, don't get the Planet Waves Tru Strobe Tuner. I received one, it was faulty - sent back! The replacement worked but was unuseable: I tried it on an epiphone Sheraton and a takamine electro-acoustic - It wouldn't detect the A or bottom E strings for about 10 secs...when fine tuning the b string, it showed up Bb!!!!! Replaced it with the Boss TU3 - Perfect, easy to use....Definately the way to go...Trust Boss..they're reliable and work!

I've been using a TU-2 for about 7 years now. No complaints whatsoever, no plans to switch.
