'Back In The Village' by Iron Maiden

I am always amazed how a bass line or lyric can totally change your opinion of a song. This was never one of my favorite Maiden tracks until after I figured out the bass line, its a real fun one to play. Sometimes a songs lyrics will do that for me as well.

It's funny, there are so many wicked cool basslines that make me go "wow, that's awesome, that's so cool" etc. etc., but whenever the question What's Your Favorite Bassline? comes up I inexplicably find myself answering

"More Today (Than Yesterday)" by Spiral Staircase. It is just such a gas to play! (Pretty sure Carol Kaye played on the original recording.)

Violent Femmes: Never Tell

This is a kind of a long "anthem" on one of their early albums.

Being a three piece acoustic band with a drummer that only played a snare drum with brushes, and a guitarist that only played very basic guitar- Brian Ritchie had to fill a lot of space with his big ol' fat Earthwood acoustic bass guitar.

I pretty much love everything he did with the Femmes, but this song is like him encapsulated.

...FYI Higher Ground is by Stevie Wonder and flea did not make up that bass line stevie did (check out inner visions it's amazing) and also flea is really overrated (IMHO)

Have a listen to RHCP's version of higher ground, it's not an exact copy, flea has added his own slap bass to it, which is a really good bass line. Altho kinda agreed about his overratedness

Hedfunk - Dark Lady (one of my favourite basslines to jam)
Pee Wee Ellis - The Chicken (Jaco Pastorius)
Charles Wright - Express Yourself
Jamiroquai - Space Cowboy (Stuart Zender, although apparently he didn't play the album version which is my favourite)
Sly & The Family Stone - If You Want Me To Stay (Larry Graham)

I was listening to the Anchorman soundtrack the other day and one of the songs slapped me in the face with one of the coolest bass lines i had heard in a while. Check out the chorus. I am actually fixing to leave work early and work up the line. ENJOY!
