What's your favorite delay pedal

i have the mxr carbon copy and a dl4. both of them are awesome for how i use them.

the carbon copy definitely has that creamy analog sound to it and it is a true bypass pedal to boot, if you care about that kind of stuff.

the dl4 is sweet as well, with several different types of delays, ability to do stereo output, etc. i may look into getting the bright carbon copy just for the hell of it

I'm not sure what my favorite is, but I like the delays on the M9 - there are quite a few to try out. I have a BOSS DD7 with external tap-tempo that I use a lot, too. I've played the Carbon Copy and liked it, but I don't own one.

Think about the type of stuff you'll be playing with delay. If the repeats need to be right on beat (as opposed to a more "ambient" type effect), you'll want a unit with tap-tempo or the ability to add an external tap-tempo. I made my own for $16 and it took 10 minutes. :)

I'll start by saying, for bass (which is really all I play but do play guitar at times), I like digital delay better. It's more crisp and clear. It stands up in the mix better.

I'll also add, I love delay! It's my fav effect next to dirt. I've tried quite a few now. At the. Moment I'm using the hardwire DL8 and the boss DD3. The DL8 is a smaller version of the DL4, with less options of course and the DD3 is well, the DD3. I use the DL8 for regular type delay work, in the lo-fi setting (yummy) and I use the DD3 for oscillating sweeps. Both great and affordable delays.

A few I really want if not at least want to try are
Line 6 DL4
Digitech obscura
Ibanez echo shifter

There are a ton of delays out there that rock. I've had the endangered Audio AD4096 which was straight awesome but I found it muddied up my sound too much. So I flipped it. I'd also like to try the echo park and the flashback. Those are supposed to be great delays as well.

Depends on the sounds you want.

Tc flashback mini (currently using) really dig it, but I'll probably get another one because Im going back and forth between the sausage and beer toneprint and the Justin's delay tone prints all the time. I got mine on sale for $70 new.


Boss dd-3, had this one until a few weeks ago. If you want the Tool delay sound get this. Very punchy sounding delay. Just didn't suit how I use delay. The hold feature is pretty fun to goof around with.

Line 6 m5. Really dug the digital delay with modulation, also get a ton of other effects and the reverbs in particular were very nice.

I love my memory boy, and am currently considering an old blood noise endeavors Black fountain. Both are great for creating ambient space and have modulation that adds a lot of life to long notes. Neither are super precise mega delays like the strymons but they serve me a little better

The Strymon TimeLine is my favorite delay. I second what others have said regarding digital delay with bass and analog with guitar, although the TimeLine on guitar is delicious. For the delays I use with bass, the option of a highpass filter on the repeats (in the TimeLine's parameters) helps cut back on low end mush. I don't have any experience with the DL4 but know plenty of people who are happy with it.

Ibanez DE7. Handy, simple, sturdy & cheap. Good sound quality with bass.
Out of production.

I've used a few Boss delay pedals on occasions. Also very nice most of the time, different functionality than the Ibanez.
And I've played a bit with digital and analog tape delay studio equipment, not really comparable with pedals.

Carbon Copy fan here, I'm sure this is first gen as I've had it a long time but I've never noticed it sounding dark, it actually seems a bit glassy to me. At any rate, it fits in very well on my pedal board and I've really enjoyed it.
