What's your MÜB story?

Good day! This is my second ever post to Talkbass, but I've been reading the forums on and off over the last decade or so.

It was one of those night around 6 years ago when I was reading through the Luthier's corner and found a build bu miziomix. I got in on the build late and was enthralled with the quirky, smart, skillful and beautiful build - a headless jazz bass with a head.

I was hooked. I searched through the forum and found his first build which was equally enthralling.

I did not sleep that night and I've been following his builds through the years.

Fast forward to 2014. I was assigned to Malaysia and on some random search, found the
Über-Jay Basses facebook page. I was excited to find that the operation is based in Kuala Lumpur, 10 minutes from where I lived! I sent a message through facebook, not expecting much. Impossibly, I got a reply. I got an invitation to see his basses.

The next weekend, I was drinking beer with Maurizio Caduto, owner and maker of Maurizio's Über Basses. We got to talking about the bass I'd like built. I haven't had a bass custom built before so I did not know what to expect, but I loved the approach that Mairizio took. He asked, what's the story for the bass.

Earlier, looking through the website, I had my eye on a beautiful olive top - which looked more amazing in person. But that was before the story, the name. The name we settled on was Porthos. Porthos was the name of my second child who did not make it through childbirth. It was a very emotional moment when we settled on that name. The rest of the bass then fell into place. Instead of the gorgeous olive top, we went with a spalt Rambutan top that, appropriately, looked like it had been through a lot.

Later that day, when I was telling my wife about the concept of the build, she knew what the bass was going to be called before I told her about Porthos.

We then went through playing style, string spacing preferences, pickups, etc. It's been an amazing build process. Fast forward a few months and my breath is still taken away when I see Porthos.

I am in KL now. Meeting Maurizio later. Will be collecting the "Soul Anchor ".

I like the way Maurizio approaches bass building, each piece unique with stories of the owner.

Been testing the bass for two nights now, amazed at it's tone and looks.

I guess this thread can be official MÜB Club...

p.s. Saw Porthos, what a beauty, and thanks for sharing the story and inspiration behind.

Oh my....... I didn't know about this thread until Yinghock sent me the link. I am overwhelmed, really. Thank you UsedtobeaBassist (AndsoontobeOneagain LOL)! Building Porthos was a great experience. Even more so, as I have gained a good friend.
In a few days we'll know how it sounds with dual coils and the series/parallel/single switch. Killer, I suppose

Hey Yinghock! I so regret having handed the Soul Anchor over to you so soon! that big tone, and that slap...... oh that slap tone....!! Remember... +80% bass, treble all the way up, cut high mids all the way, slightly more neck p-up, humbucker, +60% master tone. Oh boy..........!!!

while listening to the oblivion bass theme on the MUB bass website MÜB Maurizio's Über Basses

and i have no idea why i "stole" the pictures and the song and dumped it all into the movie maker so i could put this on loop and watch the wood and metal turn into a bass while listening to the bass

just amazing!!

Not so much of an inspiring story, but really a bass thought through, built with the owner (me) in mind. Details, innovations, hidden symbols, and all the feasting with the man himself, really make this bass more personal than ever.

Maurizio's creativity, innovations, generousity, philosophies in life, directly influence how he build his basses.

Yeah, I saw the prices and looking at them plus the craftsmanship really make that a heck of a deal.
