What's your take on flats?

The last time I tried Rotosound RS77s, they only came in one gauge, 50-thru-to-100-and-something, IIRC - forgive me but that's near 50 years ago, so things may have changed as far as variety in that brand and type. - Still, that is a rather heavy gauge for a flat metal outer wrap design.

Rotosound Jazz Bass 77 flats come in at least three different tensions/weights, last I saw: light, medium, and heavy. I play the mediums on my StingRay, and they seem fine to me, so I haven't really bothered with others since I started putting them on.
