when did 9v batteries become obsolete?

moved recently, and just unpacked a box that had been in storage since 2015, or so. Inside was my long lost Boss Tu-12h tuner! The battery was dead, but at least it hadn't leaked.

So I run off to the store to by some fresh batteries and head to the "wall o' power" which has well over 100 different packs of batteries in all sizes and by 3 different brands. After several minutes of searching, I finally find two packs of 9 volts down on the bottom rung, 1" off the floor. A two pack of Ever-Ready and a single Duracell.

Was this just a very unusual stock of batteries or have 9 volts fallen out of favor for whatever reason?

You are basing this on looking at one store?

Once, I went to the local Walmart with the cabinets full of batteries near all the abandoned checkouts (I liked the Duracell Quantums, but they seem to be no longer available), but alas, not a single 9V battery that I wanted (only a funky Ray-O-Vac).

What to do, what to do?

I drove 11 miles to the next Walmart. They had plenty.

Most every smoke detector uses a 9v battery.
They will be around for a long time.

And I have NEVER seen a 9v leak. That is contrast to my experience that pretty much EVERY AA and AAA size battery, even from the two major producers leaks after a fairly short while. They have actually gotten worse. (Hint: use the lithium AA batteries…better/longer power and no leaks).

How many of them would you use before the rest die untouched of old age? The reason there's no market for "vintage 9V batteries" ("used by Hendrix at Monterey! just $499 on ebay") is not that we musicians are sensible creatures.

edit: thought you were the OP. That confusion dispelled, I get what you're saying now.
