When did you get a custom/boutique bass?

When Mrs. 'blue surprised me with a brand new Elrick Gold Series e-volution 5 purchased from Bass Northwest. That wonderful day happened in August 2003. This bass definitely helped me get back in the swing of things after a 17 year hiatus from bass playing.

Indeed. I recently scored a first year 85 (players grade) from a Friend that’s in that “Kubicki circle” for 2K and I’m very happy to pay that.

Nice - I had one in that colour. (Sonic Blue I think it was called) It was a 9v FCS Kubicki. Having owned both (I had a black '86 18v Kubicki) I preferred the 9v. Sellers inflate the difference ("real" Kubicki vs Fender Kubicki) but they are the exact same bass other than the 18v one extra click difference. You could always buy the FCS Factors for less, but I think people are wising up to the fact that the difference is mostly $ hype. The exact same Kubicki 9v pre is in the early 90's Jazz Plus and it sounds like a Factor - a very distinctive sound/tone that sets it apart in the mix.

I like my 9V a lot. It has a Zonish sound to it that’s hard to find on the 18V.

Another difference is the mid trim-pot on the 9v. The 18v doesn't have it. I only use the active clicks on mine, that's where that "Factor" sound lives - plus the passive clicks are too big of a drop-off output-wise.

I started playing bass at age twelve and picked up a used Warwick Streamer Stage 1 when I was around twenty-seven or twenty-eight. I got my first Sadowsky when I was going on thirty-three.

Deep burgundy / red. S/N was either #368 or #386...can't recall at the moment.
